<text>The inability to address institutional harm is a criticism of Western, liberal democracies and is particularly pertinent for settler colonial contexts where violence is structural and often seen as occurring solely in the past. Through a lens of “implication,” as developed in Michael Rothberg’s 2019 book The Implicated Subject, I assess the role of collective responsibility of and for settler colonial institutions. Through a case study of the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Mandate and Calls to Action, alongside a review of the commission’s summary reports, I evaluate how institutions in settler colonial contexts see themselves implicated (or not) for colonial policies and how these forms of responsibility are negotiated within transitional justice processes. The lens of implication can be a catalyst for understanding our associated relationality to institutional harm/violence, how we are involved in it, and how we can begin to recognize the potential for its dismantling.</text>

<text>This Special Issue interrogates the limitations and possibilities of truth within global efforts to address historical injustice. Over the past 30 years truth commissions have become ubiquitous in response to authoritarian regimes and colonial legacies. However, their ability to facilitate meaningful transformation is increasingly contested. In this editorial we explore what a decolonial reckoning, rather than reconciliation, with the past and colonial logics of power, might mean. In doing so, we argue that the liberal, modernist imaginary of justice on which many truth processes have been premised, is constraining our imagination of more radical ‘fugitive’ forms justice. Drawing from contributions from Australia and other global contexts this special issue investigates these limitations and the transformative potential of truth as a decolonial, sovereign, embodied and relational praxis. Contributors engage with the pluriversality of truth in ways that trouble the nation-state and centre the sovereignty and onto-epistemology of racialised and First Nations peoples, often excluded from transitional justice processes, thus offering pathways for radical resistance, resurgence and prefigurative transformation.</text>

<text>Numerous books explore the "how to" of qualitative research, but few discuss what it means to actually engage in it. In Demarginalizing Voices, scholars share personal stories about their research with marginalized populations, including Aboriginal peoples, sex workers, the dead and the dying, the imprisoned or recently released, and the homeless and hospitalized. They address issues of activism, emotional attachment, and the challenges of adopting innovative methods within the constraints of ethics review boards. These powerful accounts from the cutting-edge of qualitative research not only create a space in academia that centres marginalized voices, they open up the field to new debates and discussion. -- Provided by publisher.</text>

<text>Recovering Boarding School Trauma Narratives: Christopher Robin Milne as a Psychological Companion on the Journey to Healing is a unique, emotive and theorised narrative of a young girl’s experience of boarding school in Australia. Christine Jack traces its impact on the emerging identity of the child, including sexual development and emotional capacity, the transmission of trauma into adulthood and the long process of recovery. Interweaving her story with the experiences of Christopher Robin Milne, she presents her memoir as an exemplar of how narrative writing can be employed in remembering and recovering from traumatic experiences. Unique and powerfully written, Jack takes the reader on a journey into her childhood in Australian boarding school convents in the 1950s and 1960s. Comparing her experience with Christopher Robin Milne’s, she interrogates his memoirs, illustrating that boarding school trauma knows no boundaries of time and place. She investigates their emerging individuality before being sent to live an institutional life and traces their feelings of longing and loneliness as well as the impact of the abuse each endured there. As an educational historian, Jack writes in a ground-breaking way from the perspective of an insider and outsider, revealing how trauma remains in the unconscious, wielding power over the life of the adult, until the traumatic memories are recovered, emotions released and associated dysfunctional behaviour changed, restoring well-being. Engaging the lenses of history, life-span and Jungian psychology, feminist and trauma theory and boarding school trauma research, this book positions narrative writing as a way of reducing the power of trauma over the lives of survivors. Personal and accessible, this book will be essential reading for psychologists and educational historians, as well as students and academics of psychology, sociology, trauma studies, ex-boarders and those interested in the life of Christopher Robin Milne.</text>

<text>The paper explores the intersection of trauma, organizational development (OD) principles, and leadership models to redefine leadership approaches within trauma-affected contexts. Drawing upon a comprehensive review of the literature, the study underscores the multifaceted impact of trauma on individuals and organizations, emphasizing the importance of understanding trauma's diverse manifestations and proactive measures to foster supportive and responsive organizational cultures. Integrating principles of OD, diverse leadership models, and a trauma-informed approach, the paper proposes strategies for cultivating environments that promote resilience, healing, and growth in the aftermath of trauma. Through this integration, leaders can effectively navigate the complexities of trauma, promote employee well-being, and create cultures of safety, trust, and collaboration. The study concludes by emphasizing the ongoing nature of addressing trauma within organizations and the imperative for continual learning, adaptation, and commitment from leaders at all levels to foster inclusive, thriving workplaces.</text>

This is even more so the case in Indigenous communities where social tensions are present between police officers (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) and community members. While certain researchers have studied Indigenous policing, very few have explored the topic through the lens of police officers’ experiences working in these communities. As such, this study aims to document the operational, interpersonal and cultural issues associated with police interventions involving children in Quebec’s Indigenous communities. Seven Indigenous and non-Indigenous police officers working in various Quebec Indigenous communities partook in a group-based method of analysis. A thematic analysis was then carried out using the transcript that resulted from this research process. Via thematic content analysis, several concepts emerged related to police interventions involving children whose safety is compromised. These include citizen proximity, the recurrence of issues and the lack of communication between various support services. To address these issues, participants agreed on the importance of fostering communication that encourages collaboration between police and support services, including the Director of Youth Protection (DYP).</text>

<text>This paper reviews recent research findings and empirically investigates resiliency and vulnerability factors within two Native American communities. The primary factors under consideration are related to American Indian psychosocial factors. This project is an exploratory investigation of pathology and wellness for understudied American Indians, and it examines the nature of resiliency and risk for American Indians. The factors under investigation include adversarial growth, spirituality, ethnic identity, communal identity, social support, historical trauma, stressors experienced, hope, quality of life, and general psychological status for American Indians sampled. Numerous statistically significant relationships emerged, providing empirical support for culturally embedded aspects of resiliency among American Indians. The most salient resiliency factors for Native American/American Indians, in order of statistical significance, were: social support, hope, general resilient coping abilities, traditional cultural and spiritual practices, ethnic pride/enculturation, and communal mastery.</text>

<text>American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities harbor understandable mistrust of research. Outside researchers have historically controlled processes, promulgating conclusions and recommended policies with virtually no input from the communities studied.

Reservation-based communities can apply sovereignty rights conferred by the federal government to change this research trajectory. Many tribes now require review and approval before allowing research activities to occur, in part through the development of regulatory codes and oversight measures. Tribal oversight ensures that research is directed toward questions of importance to the community and that results are returned in ways that optimize problem solving. Unfortunately, tribal governance protections do not always extend to AI/ANs residing in urban environments.

Although they represent the majority of AI/ANs, urban Indians face an ongoing struggle for visibility and access to health care. It is against this backdrop that urban Indians suffer disproportionate health problems. Improved efforts to ensure responsible research with urban Indian populations requires attention to community engagement, research oversight, and capacity building. We consider strategies to offset these limitations and develop a foundation for responsible research with urban Indians.</text>

<text>Recovery from the profound negative psychological and spiritual effects of genocide is essential for individuals to live fulfilling lives, engage in reconciliation, and prevent future violence. This article discusses community approaches to trauma recovery that focus on individuals within their social context. It briefly identifies common psychological problems that follow genocide. It then presents constructivist self development theory (CSDT) as a foundation for understanding these effects and the RICH (Respect, Information, Connection, and Hope) framework, based in CSDT, for designing and assessing the effects of post-genocide psychosocial interventions. The article reviews three approaches to collective recovery: a multifamily group approach, a psychoeducational program focused on youth, and a public education program aimed to promote trauma recovery and prevent future violence. The RICH framework is applied to each approach.</text>
