<text>Wellness is an important American Indian (AI) concept, understood as being in balance with one’s body, mind, and environment. Wellness predictors are reported in this paper within the context of health. A cross-sectional randomized household survey of 457 AI adults at 13 rural health care sites in California was conducted. Measures included wellness perceptions, barriers, health status/health conditions, spirituality, cultural connectivity, high-risk behaviors and abuse history. Statistical analysis obtained the best predictive model for wellness. Predictors of wellness were general health status perception, participation in AI cultural practices and suicide ideation. Significant differences in wellness status were observed depending on experience of adverse events in childhood and adulthood (neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse). Cultural connectivity (speaking tribal language, participating in AI practices, and feeling connected to community) was also associated with perceptions of wellness. Recommendations are for culturally-appropriate education and interventions emphasizing community and cultural connectivity for improving wellness status.</text>

<text>Presidential historian Michael Beschloss uses original letters, diaries, declassified documents, and interviews to bring us into the room and into the minds of a procession of Chief Executives who took the nation into major conflicts, mobilized Americans for victory, and seized greater power for themselves. From James Madison and the War of 1812 to Lyndon Johnson and Vietnam, we see these leaders struggling with Congress, the courts, the press, their own advisers, and antiwar protesters; seeking comfort from their spouses, families, and friends; and dropping to their knees in prayer. We come to understand how these Presidents were able to withstand the pressures of war — both physically and emotionally — or were broken by them.</text>

<text>"Primo Levi (1919-87) once wrote "No one can say what his past would have been like 'if'." If it had not been for what happened to him at the age of 24, this unassuming Italian chemist might have lived and died unknown to all but his family and friends. It was the Holocaust that changed his life, and that gave him an intense need to testify." "His testimony is conveyed in a series of extraordinary books, the first of which, If This Is a Man, bears crucial witness to the horrors of the Holocaust, yet, nevertheless, in calm, almost serene, exemplary prose compellingly asserts the triumph of dignity and reason over brutality and baseness." "If This Is a Man was finally published in 1947 to respectful reviews but modest sales. In 1958 If This Is a Man was reissued in Italy, this time with great success. Other books followed, including The Truce, an account of his return from the camps through a disintegrating Europe. The Periodic Table, a brilliant, beautiful book, was published to a torrent of praise, and made his name known around the world. Re-publication of all his books swiftly followed; they were translated into seventeen languages in eighteen countries, and everywhere this gentle, discreet and modest man found himself praised and honoured." "On 11 April 1987 Primo Levi died. One of the most respected and beloved writers of our times, he had been expected to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Yet his death is widely thought to have been suicide."</text>

<text>Indigenous and Tribal Peoples and Cancer aims to provide an overview of cancer and Indigenous and Tribal peoples—from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and cancer care. It considers cancer incidence, mortality, prevalence, survival, and inequities for Indigenous and Tribal peoples globally. Most importantly, it extends beyond issues and challenges, to offer an Indigenous-knowledges, strengths-based approach to successful health interventions, research projects, research translation, and living well—both with and beyond cancer. It incorporates contributions from 223 individual authors, whose knowledge spans a wide range of disciplines and experiences. Some of the contributions are highly personal, while others report on the latest science and issues for the future.</text>

<text>Many individuals worldwide are exposed to continuous traumatic stress (CTS). However, the psychiatric sequela of CTS and the relevance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnostic criteria in this situation have yet to be determined. Filling this gap, the present study assessed psychiatric reactions to CTS and the relationship between such reactions and functional impairment among two representative samples of adults exposed to ongoing shelling over 6 (n=387) and 9 years (n=468). Assessment included PTSD symptomatology (i.e., intrusion, avoidance, hyperarousal), anxiety, somatization, and depression. Profile categorization aimed to underscore variations in symptom clustering and severity, and determine whether or not a profile is dominated by PTSD symptoms. Latent Profile analyses (LPA) of sample I revealed four distinct symptoms profiles: (1) 'symptomatically resilient'; (2) 'symptomatically low-moderate'; (3) 'symptomatically moderate-high'; and (4) 'symptomatically overall high'. LPA of sample II revealed three distinct symptoms profiles: (1) 'symptomatically resilient'; (2) 'symptomatically low-moderate'; (3) "symptomatically moderate-high". Moreover, profile variation was implicated in dysfunction. Consistent with studies focusing on single trauma exposure, the findings revealed that the most prevalent profile was the symptomatically resilient, indicating that most people exposed to CTS seem to evince a scarce number of psychiatric symptoms. Moreover, reactions to CTS proved broader than the existing PTSD symptomatology. Examining symptom dominance and severity in relation to impairment and dysfunction, and clinical considerations are discussed.

<text>Immigration occurs between countries either to obtain employment, for family reunification or to escape violence and other life-threatening conditions. Refugees and asylum seekers are often obligated to overcome a uniquely challenging set of circumstances prior to and during migration. Settlement following immigration may pose yet another set of stressors related to acculturation to the host country, as well as financial insecurity, discrimination, language barriers, and social isolation. Here we discuss the multiple consequences of immigration experiences, focusing on the health disturbances that frequently develop in adults and children. Aside from the psychosocial influences, immigration-related challenges may cause hormonal, inflammatory immune, and microbiota changes that favor psychological and physical illnesses. Some biological alterations are subject to modification by epigenetic changes, which have implications for intergenerational trauma transmission, as might disruptions in parenting behaviors and family dysfunction. Despite the hardships experienced, many immigrants and their families exhibit positive psychological adjustment after resettlement. We provide information to diminish the impacts associated with immigration and offer strength-based approaches that may foster resilience.</text>

<text>Quiet As It’s Kept draws on and extends recent psychoanalytic and psychiatric work of shame and trauma theorists to offer an in-depth analysis of Toni Morrison’s representation of painful and shameful race matters in her fiction. Providing a frank and sustained look at the troubling, if not distressing, aspects of Morrison’s fiction that other critics have studiously avoided or minimized in their commentaries, this book challenges established views of Morrison, showing her to be an author who forces readers into uncomfortable confrontations with matters of race. In Quiet As It’s Kept, J. Brooks Bouson explores these issues in Morrison’s works The Bluest Eye, Sula, Song of Solomon, Tar Baby, Beloved, Jazz, and Paradise.

Morrison, Nobel prize-winning author, has viewed part of her cultural and literary task as a writer to bear witness to the plight of black Americans. “Quiet as it’s kept, much of our business, our existence here, has been grotesque. It really has,” she has commented. As she exposes to public view sensitive race matters in her fiction, Morrison presents jarring depictions of the trauma of slavery and the horrors of racist oppression and black-on-black violence.</text>

<text>In Canada, more than 34,000 cases of sexual assault were reported to police in 2022, representing a 38% increase from 2017. However, it is estimated that only about 6% of sexual assaults are reported to police, making the actual number of sexual assaults in Canada much higher. In a recent study with my graduate student Lauren E. Thompson, we sought to understand jurors' perceptions of the credibility of sexual assault charges when there is a delay in reporting them. Specifically, we sought to understand how jurors' perceptions may be affected by delayed reporting (of two months, 10 years, 20 years) and the reasons for delayed reporting: lack of evidence, fear of retaliation or not wanting family to know. We used a mock-juror paradigm to assess perceptions of the victim and verdict.</text>

<text>This study examined the prevalence of screened posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated diabetes-related outcomes. A sample of American Indian adults with type 2 diabetes (n = 218) participated in interviewer-administered surveys. Using a cutoff of 3 on the Primary Care PTSD screener, 21.8 % of participants screened positive for PTSD. PTSD symptoms were negatively associated with self-rated health status and positively associated with past year hospitalization after controlling for several demographic factors, but not after controlling for depressive symptoms. Past month frequency of hyperglycemia symptoms was not related to PTSD symptoms. When grouped by mental health conditions (neither screened PTSD nor depressive symptoms, screened PTSD only, depressive symptoms only, and both), those with both screened PTSD and depressive symptoms reported the highest proportion of any past month hyperglycemia, past year hospitalization, and low self-rated health status. Screened PTSD, especially in those with comorbid depressive symptoms, is an important consideration in diabetes care.</text>

<text>Reaching the three targets of the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR) Action Plan is the litmus test for effective EPSR implementation. While the EPSR puts forward a prima facie balance between employment, equal opportunities and social protection, two important questions arise: a) whether and to what extent the resources available at EU level are sufficiently balanced across the different dimensions of the EPSR; and b) which implications this may have for achieving the 2030 poverty target. Analysing the three domains of the EPSR, its Action Plan and the wider EU legal framework of the principles contained in the EPSR, the paper argues that abundant EU resources are available for the areas of equality and employment, but fewer for social inclusion. The empirical evidence on poverty trends over the past decades, however, points to important successes in terms of employment and (gender) equality, but not with respect to social inclusion: a significant increase in employment and defeminisation of poverty have been accompanied by greater precarity for low-skilled men and women. Particularly striking is the rise in the risk of poverty among jobless households, linked with the weakening of the poverty reduction capacity of social protection for this group. Meeting the European social inclusion targets will thus require policies that duly focus on strengthening the framework for social inclusion and social protection.</text>
