<text>Microaggressions are intentional or unintentional brief acts of subtle or covert bias and discrimination aimed at persons from targeted groups, which may trigger memories of past individual or collective acts of oppression. Researchers exploring the potential trauma of microaggressions have looked beyond traditional notions of physical, single-event trauma to acknowledge emotional trauma. The convergence of historical trauma with contemporary trauma in the form of microaggressions is explored in the lives of American Indians. Along with researching the motivation and effects of microaggressions, investigators have examined the protective factors and coping strategies. Researchers and clinicians need to continue to expand the view of microaggression trauma to reach beyond post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Microaggressions can rise to the level of a psychological trauma based on either the cumulative effect of multiple acts over time or single events that trigger memories of prior personal or collective traumatic acts of oppression.</text>

<text>This book maps the encounters between Indigenous Peoples and local communities with mining companies in various postcolonial contexts. Combining comparative and multidisciplinary analysis, the contributors to this volume shine a light on how the mining industry might adapt its practices to the political and legal contexts where they operate. Understanding these processes and how communities respond to these encounters is critical to documenting where and how encounters with mining may benefit or negatively impact Indigenous Peoples. The experiences and reflections shared by Indigenous and non-Indigenous contributors will enhance our understanding of evolving practices and of the different strategies and discourses developed by Indigenous Peoples to deal with mining projects. By mobilizing in-depth fieldwork in five regions—Australia, Canada, Sweden, New Caledonia, and Brazil—this body of work highlights voices often marginalized in mining development studies, including those of Indigenous Peoples and women. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of mining and the extractive industries, sustainable development, natural resource management, and Indigenous Peoples.</text>

<text>Behavioural traits in mammals are influenced by environmental factors, which can interact with the genome and modulate its activity by complex molecular interplay. Environmental experiences can modify social, emotional and cognitive behaviours during an individual’s lifetime, and result in acquired behavioural traits that can be transmitted to subsequent generations. This Review discusses the concept of, and experimental support for, non-genetic transgenerational inheritance of acquired traits involving the germ line in mammals. Possible mechanisms of induction and maintenance during development and adulthood are considered along with an interpretation of recent findings showing the involvement of epigenetic modifications and non-coding RNAs in male germ cells.</text>

<text>In this book, Angelou details what brought her mother to send her away, and unearths the well of emotions she experienced long afterward as a result. For the first time, she reveals the triumphs and struggles of being the daughter of Vivian Baxter, an indomitable spirit whose petite size belied her larger-than-life presence, a presence absent during much of the author's early life. When her marriage began to crumble, Vivian famously sent three-year-old Maya and her older brother away from their California home to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. Their reunion a decade later began a story that has never before been told.</text>

<text>A partner's reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA) can significantly undermine women's physical health and psychological wellbeing. Yet little research has explored how RCA affects experiences of mothering and relationships with children. Based on an analysis of interviews with 30 Australian mothers, we found that RCA affected mothering in complex ways. Many struggled with feeling detached, resentful, and guilty toward their children, while some found mothering an emotionally and morally restorative experience after the RCA. All felt compelled to conceal their abuse from their children and others. The findings have implications for how healthcare practitioners can support mothers in the aftermath of RCA.</text>

<text>This article summarizes key findings from the national evaluation of the Safe Start Demonstration Project. As part of Safe Start, local mental health systems and practitioners played essential roles in protecting young children from the impact of exposure to violence. Both crisis circumstances (e.g., a domestic violence incident) and noncrisis circumstances (e.g., ongoing mental health treatment) are opportunities for mental health practitioners to access children exposed to violence and address the negative consequences often associated with exposure. One Safe Start grantee found that family and child functioning improved and violence ended when families participated in a crisis intervention provided by clinicians. Three grantees found evidence that therapeutic and family support services reduced the impact of exposure to violence on children. Community partnerships were a critical component of the Safe Start services that demonstrated positive mental health outcomes for children who have been exposed to violence and their families. Furthermore, successful mental health interventions incorporated cross-disciplinary strategies and practices that integrated and sequenced services so that all family members and their multiple needs were supported. In addressing the needs of families experiencing violence, mental health practitioners need to consider the potential value of partnering with other service providers in the community and providing their services within the context of more comprehensive interventions.</text>

<text>Purpose: Native American youth experience significant challenges to mental well-being. As part of a larger study to evaluate hope and resilience in a Plains tribal population, the purpose of this study was to learn from Native American elders and youths what they feel is needed to for youth to grow up healthy on the reservation, and to identify connections between horse use and mental well-being.

Sample: Six Native American elders and eight Native American youths from the same Plains tribe.

Method: The research team conducted Talking Circles with youths and elders. During the Talking Circles, participants identified community-specific questions for inclusion in a resilience measurement and provided personal stories regarding the relevance of the horse to well-being.

Findings: Both groups felt cultural traditions and language, education, relationships, and interactions with horses have significant roles in enhancing identity development and resilience in youth. However, elders indicated that tribal youth seem to struggle in navigating two worlds. Elders expressed that for youth to be well, they need to return to traditional ways within the realms of culture, language, education, and relationships. On the other hand, the youths were more confident in their ability to navigate two worlds, and wished to seek opportunities to blend their traditional and contemporary lives.

Conclusion: The challenges of navigating two worlds for Native Americans are experienced across generations. Both youths and elders said that resilient youth are able to successfully navigate these challenges when they: (a) know their indigenous identity, (b) participate in cultural activities, (c) have strong family ties, and (d) are able to learn in an environment where their culture is championed. We propose that future efforts must include community-based participatory methods in the development of interventions that include use of the horse to strengthen Native American youth resilience and foster health and well-being.</text>

<text>Intimate, honest, humorous and vividly graphic stories of family drama, political upheaval, sexual seduction, divorce, mass murder, betrayal, and the triumph of resurrection pour out when charismatic Holocaust survivor Xavier Piat breaks his long silence to share a remarkable past with his daughter, Naava Piatka. A colorful cast of true-life characters of Jewish visionaries, Nazi tormentors, Yiddish actresses, and international celebrities appear in recollections that span the globe from St. Petersburg to Paris, Vilna to London, Cape Town to Boston, and Jerusalem to New York. When her father, the authoritarian "god" Naava worshiped and feared, is revealed as a sensitive, complex mortal-the sole member of his once-large family to survive the Holocaust-both father and daughter experience renewed understanding, compassion and forgiveness. An engaging narrative with poetic phrasing and deep personal insight, No Goodbyes reminds us that our lives are interconnected, that suffering can turn into celebration, and that love, family, and the power of stories endure beyond death.</text>

<text>In this commentary on Pillemer et al. (2024), we aimed to highlight a particular type of vicarious memories and their functional significance by exploring the transmission of conflict-related memories across generations, shifting the focus from personal to collective memory. We discuss how historical family memories influence the subsequent generation’s perception of their parents’ experiences, societal contexts, individual and group identities, values, and intergenerational relationships. While studies emphasize the temporal and mnemonic limitations of memory transmission, such as the loss of details and potential distortions, understanding how vicarious memories can intersect with collective memories is important. This understanding not only shapes how individuals perceive themselves and others but also influences societal interpretations of the past, fostering intergroup understanding and collective memory continuity across generations.</text>
