<text>Background Food insecurity has involved more than 750 million individuals worldwide. The association of food insecurity with socio-economic factors is also undeniable demand more consideration. Food insecurity will become a global priority by 2030. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined current literature concerning the association between food insecurity and psychological distress. Methods Relevant researches were identified by searching databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science, ProQuest, and Cochrane Library up to June 2024 without language limitation. Then a snowball search was conducted in the eligible studies. The quality assessment was made through Newcastle–Ottawa Scale. Results Data were available from 44 cross-sectional articles for systematic review and 17 eligible articles for meta-analysis with 2,267,012 and 1,953,636 participants, respectively. Findings support the growing segment of literature on the association between food insecurity and psychological distress. The highly represented groups were households with low income. Psychological and diabetic distress was directly associated with food insecurity as it increased the odds of distress to 329% (OR: 3.29; 95% CI: 2.46–4.40). Sleep problems, anxiety, depression, lower life satisfaction, obesity, and a higher rate of smoking were among the secondary outcomes. Conclusion Food insecurity was a common stressor that can have a negative impact on psychological well-being and even physical health. The findings should be considered in the public health and making policy-making process.</text>

<text>The trauma of sexual assault is heightened for many women by the interlocking experience of societal traumas such as racism, sexism, and poverty. The mental health effects of sexual assault are mediated by race and ethnicity. The investigators explore the experiences of African American, Asian American, Latina, and Native American female survivors of sexual assault. The sociohistorical context of intergenerational trauma in the lives of ethnic minorities is a part of the context for the contemporary experience of sexualized violence. Racial and ethnic dynamics related to sexual assault prevalence, mental health effects, and disclosure are examined. Literature related to cultural beliefs, community attitudes, and perceived social support in relation to sexualized violence are also reviewed. Finally, practice, research, and policy implications are discussed.</text>

<text>Armenian Americans have a rich historical narrative characterized by resilience in the face of adversity. Despite this, a significant research gap exists concerning mental health disparities and barriers to accessing psychotherapy within this community, leading to marginalization and inadequate representation. Consequently, clinicians may lack a comprehensive understanding of the importance of cultural humility in their interactions with Armenian American individuals. This dissertation sought to address these gaps by examining the obstacles hindering Armenian Americans from seeking treatment, with a focus on potential gender-based disparities. Through qualitative research methods, particularly semi-structured interviews, the study explored the perspectives of American-born Armenians, aged 18 and older, on psychotherapeutic treatment and mental health symptoms. Employing Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology facilitated a nuanced understanding of participants' responses, revealing key themes such as stigma, support systems, and adherence to traditional gender roles as primary barriers to treatment. Specifically, societal perceptions of weakness hindered males, while females often relied on informal support networks instead of formal therapy channels. Moreover, traditional gender roles were found to influence perceptions differently for each gender within the community. The findings underscore the importance of efforts to combat stigma, raise awareness, and improve access to culturally competent care to ensure equitable mental health outcomes for Armenian Americans. Establishing a nurturing mental health environment is crucial to providing all members of this community with the support and assistance they need.</text>

<text>Epigenetic changes may account for the doubled risk to develop schizophrenia in individuals exposed to famine in utero. We therefore investigated DNA methylation in a unique sample of patients and healthy individuals conceived during the great famine in China. Subsequently, we examined two case-control samples without famine exposure in whole blood and brain tissue. To shed light on the causality of the relation between famine exposure and DNA methylation, we exposed human fibroblasts to nutritional deprivation. In the famine-exposed schizophrenia patients, we found significant hypermethylation of the dual specificity phosphatase 22 (DUSP22) gene promoter (Chr6:291687-293285) (N = 153, p = 0.01). In this sample, DUSP22 methylation was also significantly higher in patients independent of famine exposure (p = 0.025), suggesting that hypermethylation of DUSP22 is also more generally involved in schizophrenia risk. Similarly, DUSP22 methylation was also higher in two separate case-control samples not exposed to famine using DNA from whole blood (N = 64, p = 0.03) and postmortem brains (N = 214, p = 0.007). DUSP22 methylation showed strong genetic regulation across chromosomes by a region on chromosome 16 which was consistent with new 3D genome interaction data. The presence of a direct link between famine and DUSP22 transcription was supported by data from cultured human fibroblasts that showed increased methylation (p = 0.048) and expression (p = 0.019) in response to nutritional deprivation (N = 10). These results highlight an epigenetic locus that is genetically regulated across chromosomes and that is involved in the response to early-life exposure to famine and that is relevant for a major psychiatric disorder.</text>

              <text>Rationale
While breastfeeding is well recognized as beneficial, rates of breastfeeding among American Indian women are below average and contribute to health inequities. Culturally specific approaches to breastfeeding research are called for to inform appropriate interventions in American Indian communities. Specifically, a grandmother's role in breastfeeding promotion is of great import particularly in American Indian (AI) groups, although is an understudied topic to date.
Objective
This research seeks to fill a prominent literature gap by utilizing a grounded theory and community-based research approach to inform breastfeeding practices from the voices of grandmothers and health care professionals in a rural AI community in the United States.
Methods
A community-based approach guided the research process. Convenience and snowball sampling was used to recruit for semi-structured and follow up member checking interviews with AI grandmothers (n = 27) and health care professionals (n = 7). Qualitative data were transcribed, characterized into meaning units, and coded by a review panel. Data were reconciled for discrepancies among reviewers, organized thematically, and used to generate community-specific breastfeeding constructs.
Results
Three major themes emerged, each with relevant subthemes: (1) importance of breastfeeding; (2) attachment, bonding, and passing on knowledge; and (3) overburdened health care system. Multiple subthemes represent stressors and impact breastfeeding knowledge, translation, and practice within this community including formula beliefs, historical traumas, societal pressures, mistrust, and substance abuse.
Conclusions
Interventions designed to raise breastfeeding rates in the study site community would ideally be grounded in tribal resources and involve a collaborative approach that engages the greater community, grandmothers, health care professionals, and scientific partners with varying skills. More research is needed to determine stressors and any potential impact on infant feeding practices among other AI groups. Application of the research approach presented here to other AI communities may be beneficial for understanding opportunities and challenges to breastfeeding practices.</text>

<text>While there are similarities between the combat patients and the non-combat controls, a clear-cut picture emerges of the combat veteran syndrome with a severely disabling condition involving startle reactions, sleep difficulties, dizziness, blackouts, avoidance of activities similar to combat experience, and internalization of feelings. He is not however psychotic.
The achievements of the medical and allied professions especially in dealing with the acute combat cases have been valuable but less and less interest is being shown to this particular group of veterans. In many hospitals and clinics there is no official record kept as to whether a patient was ever in combat. It is suggested that if we are to continue to study this group of patients we must at least keep track of them. Particularly with the recent emphasis on "here and now" in psychotherapy a combat veteran's tendency to avoid discussing his traumatic combat experiences may easily create a tacit agreement between the therapist and the veteran to avoid the subject. We suggest that a continuing and broadening attack on the psychological aspects of these problems is indicated. Such a study will help to clarify our concept of psychoneurosis in general and contribute to the maintenance and improvement of these men.</text>

Two groups of aging Israeli combat veterans (M age = 57), 128 ex-prisoners of war (ex-POWs), and 106 comparable combat veterans (controls), were assessed at 3 times: 18 (Time 1 [T1]), 30 (Time 2 [T2]), and 35 (Time 3 [T3]) years after the war. They filled out self-report questionnaires on depression, guilt, and subjective age. Results revealed that significantly more ex-POWs had chronic or delayed clinical levels of depressive symptoms than did controls and that chronic and delayed depressive symptoms were associated with a higher subjective age at T3. Furthermore, the path between depressive symptoms at T1 for predicting subjective age at T3 was fully explained by levels of guilt-distress at T2. Although the mediation effect was found in both study groups, it was significantly stronger among ex-POWs than among controls. These findings suggest that not only is depression a long-term sequela of traumatic stress, it is also a risk factor for psychological aging among war veterans. Furthermore, guilt-distress appears to play an important role in advancing subjective age, especially among ex-POWs. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</text>

<text>North Central New Mexico (the Valley) has the highest per capita accidental drug overdose death rate in the United States: From 42 to 72 per 100,000 from 1995 to 2006; the USA rate is about 5 per 100,000. This book examines the social forces – race, religion, class, and gender structures – that underpin the epidemic of overdose deaths in the Valley. The 34 interviews of active drug users and 10 interviews of family members and professionals are iteratively analyzed via sociological concepts and literature – Anomic Suicide, post-Marxism, current sociological drug addiction theory, colonialism, historical/cultural trauma, racial and ethnic inequality, and autoethnography. Research design employed both qualitative and quantitative data from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator. This mixed method allowed for the triangulation of disparate data. Amongst the profiles of suicide and overdose victims significant overlap was found. Colonization and street-level trauma appear to create a variant of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder termed Cultural-post traumatic stress disorder resulting in high incidence of morbidity and mortality amongst Hispanics in the Valley.</text>
