<text>The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of how historical trauma and one’s degree of ethnic identity relate to symptoms of depression, due to controversy in the literature about such variables. Participants in this study self-identified as Native American, were over the age of 18, and were currently enrolled or have been previously enrolled at the University of North Dakota (UND). Participants completed a survey online via Qualtrics to gather information about their ethnic identity, frequency of historical loss thinking, and symptoms of depression. Historical loss thinking was found to be very prevalent among this sample, and this was found to contribute significantly to depressive symptoms in Indigenous college students. Various aspects of ethnic identity may contribute to an increase or decrease in historical loss thinking and subsequent depressive symptoms, and this has significant implications for clinicians working with Indigenous college students and UND as an institution.</text>

<text>The theory of historical trauma was developed to explain the current problems facing many Native Americans. This theory purports that some Native Americans are experiencing historical loss symptoms (e.g., depression, substance dependence, diabetes, dysfunctional parenting, unemployment) as a result of the cross-generational transmission of trauma from historical losses (e.g., loss of population, land, and culture). However, there has been skepticism by mental health professionals about the validity of this concept. The purpose of this article is to systematically examine the theoretical underpinnings of historical trauma among Native Americans. The author seeks to add clarity to this theory to assist professional counselors in understanding how traumas that occurred decades ago continue to impact Native American clients today.</text>

<text>American Indians suffer disproportional disease burden from chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes (hereinafter “diabetes”). In response to this health crisis, the United States Congress implemented the Special Diabetes Program for Indians (SDPI), a community-based demonstration project to help patients prevent diabetes and reduce risk for cardiovascular disease. This paper describes how intervention case managers at one SDPI site, the Yakama Healthy Heart Program (YHHP), conceptualized culturally responsive intervention strategies, and patient, system, and cultural factors that impact participation in the SDPI intervention.

Methods: Thematic analyses of qualitative data derived from focus groups comprised of three categories: retained participants, non-retained participants, and intervention case managers.

Findings: Recommendations to inform an American Indian participatory medical model include: 1) reciprocity of individuals and systems must be implemented throughout all levels and for the duration of the intervention; 2) community champions need to serve as intervention leaders; and 3) institutional structures must promote relationship building between providers and patients within a community and cultural context. Our findings indicate that the unique structural qualities and community-engaged retention strategies of YHHP are critical to ensuring strong case manager-patient relationships, recruitment, and retention.</text>

<text>On June 21, 2023, the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement and the Roundtable for the Promotion of Health Equity held a workshop on the Ecosystem of Health Equity Measures in Oakland, California. The co-chair of the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement, Ana Diez Roux of Drexel University, made opening remarks reflecting on the roundtable’s past exploration of measures (or metrics1) of health disparity and health equity that considered how these measures can be used to enhance understanding and awareness, and to promote and support action. She noted that measures reflect values, and they can be used to both illuminate and mask reality, thus warranting discussion and debate. Planning committee chair Sheri Johnson of the University of Wisconsin, Madison gave an overview of the workshop objectives and the agenda. The evolving ecosystem of health equity measures, she stated, includes scientists, practitioners, and people with “firsthand knowledge of systems and structures that produce inequity.” She added that collaboration and alignment are needed to decide what new measures are needed, what measures should be retired, and what measures matter. Though not offering a comprehensive examination of the ecosystem of measures, the workshop was intended to: Critique concepts, language, narratives, and framing of measurement of health equity; Examine the nature and purpose of metrics for transformational change; Discuss the state of the science and the social and political implications of designing data collection and methods; and Explore measures at different scales and in different domains. <text>Suicide has reached epidemic proportions in America, claiming over 45,000 lives each year—more than car accidents or homicides. For every person who dies there are about 10 unsuccessful attempts. Yet suicides are preventable, if we can grasp the complex factors behind it and look out for suicide’s signs in our families, communities, and colleagues. In this groundbreaking book, acclaimed journalist James Barrat delivers these insights with a deep dive into America’s suicide crisis.</text>

<text>The goal of the present study was to gain insight into the experience of parents and siblings of incarcerated men who went through different stages of legal proceedings, arrest, and incarceration. The main questions of the research revolved around family relationships, attitudes toward various situations and perceived obstacles and experiences throughout the different stages of what they defined as “crisis”. A thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 17 parents and 10 siblings of incarcerated men in Israel shows that nuclear family members may experience various struggles, including family hardships, negative social experiences, and negative institutional experiences. Negative feelings, changes in attitudes toward society and its facilities, and loss of trust, resulted in the development of counter rejection, a process in which families seemed to be growing closer together and further away from social circles, and wavering almost all external help.</text>

<text>Women who have experienced conflict-related sexual violence report significant long-term effects, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and relationship difficulties. Research has demonstrated that maternal trauma is associated with children's behavioural difficulties and challenges in family functioning, such as impaired communication and harsh parenting. This pilot study is aimed at evaluating the preliminary effectiveness of family therapy for Kosovar mothers who experienced conflict-related sexual violence in 1998–1999 and later developed PTSD and their children in improving family functioning and reducing behavioural difficulties in postwar times. Sixty-four mothers were randomised to an intervention group or a waitlist control group. Data was collected during a screening phase, at baseline before intervention initiation, after the intervention group completed family therapy and once the waitlist control group received the intervention. Generalised linear mixed models were used to analyse group differences in family functioning and children's behaviours over time. At follow-up, mothers in the intervention group reported improved family functioning. However, mothers in the waitlist control group reported significantly fewer behavioural difficulties than mothers in the intervention group before the control group had started family therapy. There was no significant interaction between group condition and time for child-rated family functioning. Overall, this pilot study suggests that family therapy could be effective in reducing the effects of intergenerational trauma related to PTSD and conflict-related sexual violence. Future research should evaluate the long-term effects of family therapy to assess if immediate effects were maintained.</text>

<text>When Bowen was a student and practitioner of classical psychoanalysis at the Menninger Clinic, he became engrossed in understanding the process of schizophrenia and its relationship to mother-child symbiosis. Between the years 1950 and 1959, at Menninger and later at the National Institute of Mental Health (as first chief of family studies), he worked clinically with over 500 schizophrenic families. This extensive experience was a time of fruition for his thinking as he began to conceptualize human behavior as emerging from within the context of a family system. Later, at Georgetown University Medical School, Bowen worked to extend the application of his ideas to the neurotic family system. Initially he saw his work as an amplification and modification of Freudian theory, but later viewed it as an evolutionary step toward understanding human beings as functioning within their primary network: their family. One of the most renowned theorist and therapist in the field of family work, this book encompasses the breadth and depth of Bowen’s contributions. It presents the evolution of Bowen’s Family Theory from his earliest essays on schizophrenic families and their treatment, through the development of his concepts of triangulation, intergenerational conflict and societal regression, and culminating in his brilliant exploration of the differentiation of one’s self in one’s family of origin.</text>

              <text>Purpose

Despite accumulating evidence from experimental animal studies showing that paternal environmental exposures induce genetic and epigenetic alterations in sperm which in turn increase the risk of adverse health outcomes in offspring, there is limited epidemiological data on the effects of human paternal preconception exposures on children’s health. We summarize animal and human studies showing that paternal preconception environmental exposures influence offspring health. We discuss specific approaches and designs for human studies to investigate the health effects of paternal preconception exposures, the specific challenges these studies may face, and how we might address them.
Recent Findings

In animal studies, paternal preconception diet, stress, and chemical exposures have been associated with offspring health and these effects are mediated by epigenetic modifications transmitted through sperm DNA, histones, and RNA. Most epidemiological studies have examined paternal preconception occupational exposures and their effect on the risk of birth defects and childhood cancer; few have examined the effects of low-level general population exposure to environmental toxicants. While the design and execution of epidemiological studies of paternal preconception exposures face challenges, particularly with regard to selection bias and recruitment, we believe these are tractable and that preconception studies are feasible.
Summary

New or augmented prospective cohort studies would be the optimal method to address the critical knowledge gaps on the effect of paternal preconception exposures on prevalent childhood health outcomes. Determining if this period of life represents a window of heightened vulnerability would improve our understanding of modifiable risk factors for children’s health and wellbeing.</text>

These emotions are central to the racial edifice of societies, thus, analysts and policymakers should understand their collective nature, be aware of how they function, and appreciate the existence of variability among emoting racial subjects. Clarity on these matters is key for developing an effective affective politics to challenge any racial order. After the sketch, I offer potential strategies to retool our racial emotive order as well as our racial selves. I end my address urging White sociologists to acknowledge the significance of racism in sociology and the emotions it engenders and to work to advance new personal and organizational anti-racist practices."</text>

<text>Micronesia has one of the highest suicide rates in the world (WHO, 2016), with numbers reaching alarming and epidemic-like heights for decades (Lowe, 2019). Within this population, research has identified the CHamoru people (e.g., Indigenous Pacific Islanders of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam) are at the highest risk for suicide attempts and death. Yet, there is a paucity of literature on CHamoru mental health, with only a handful of research studies examining the mental health experiences of the CHamoru people. Thus, little is known to help counseling psychologists understand the mental health of the CHamoru community. Utilizing constructivist grounded theory and liberation psychology, this mixed-method research study offers foundational insight into how CHamoru Cultural Knowledge (e.g., ethnic identity and consciousness) and colonial mentality impact the mental health outcomes of CHamoru people. Quantitative results from this study indicate that ethnic identity and consciousness improved depression and anxiety symptoms and demonstrated that higher levels of consciousness decreased depressive symptoms. Qualitative findings corroborated these results while also further elucidating these findings. These findings provide initial documentation on the impact of colonial mentality and CHamoru Cultural Knowledge on the mental health of CHamoru adults.</text>

<text>This report details a needs assessment conducted in Fitzroy Crossing and surrounding communities following the devastating floods of January 2023. The assessment, a collaboration between the Marninwarntikura Women’s Resource Centre, Royal Far West, and UNICEF Australia, aimed to understand the flood's impact on the social and emotional wellbeing of children and families, identify community needs, and gather recommendations for future disaster preparedness and recovery. The findings, based on interviews with community members and service providers, highlight the compounding effects of pre-existing disadvantage and the urgent need for child-focused disaster response strategies. The report emphasizes the resilience of the community and the importance of incorporating their voices in developing effective solutions.</text>
