<text>This essay is an introduction to the thematic issue of Transcultural Psychiatry in honor of the work of Michael Chandler and Christopher Lalonde, developmental psychologists who made essential contributions to the study of identity and wellness among Indigenous youth in Canada and internationally. We outline their major contributions and illustrate the ways their innovative theory and methods have inspired decades of research, including the recent work presented in this issue, which addresses four broad themes: (1) the importance of a developmental perspective in mental health research; (2) the role of individual and collective continuity of identity in suicide prevention and mental health promotion; (3) Indigenous perspectives on trauma and resilience; and (4) Indigenous knowledge and values as a basis for culturally adapted and culturally grounded mental health services and interventions.</text>

<text>The need for organ donation is substantial among Native Americans, driven by the disproportionate burden of ESRD. Due to the dearth of knowledge about willingness to donate (WTD) among urban Native Americans, a group that represents over half of the U.S. Native population, we aimed to examine factors affecting donation. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of a convenience sample, using a questionnaire developed specifically for this study using community-based participatory research. The questionnaire was designed to be culturally relevant to the Native community, based on questions from three previously validated instruments and developed through one-on-one interviews. We performed logistic regression to associate survey answers with WTD. Results: Seventy percent of our 183 respondents stated that they would be willing to have their organs donated after death, however only 41% were already registered as an organ donor on their driver’s license. Logistic regression analysis found specific items in domains of trust of the medical community and spirituality most closely associated with WTD. Sixty-two percent of Native Americans surveyed reported they would not donate organs because they distrust the medical community. Discussion: Our findings suggest multiple areas of focus for increasing organ donation within this subset of the diverse Native community. Efforts to promote donation should be aimed at building trust in the medical community.</text>

<text>This chapter is premised on the assumption that the definition of trauma entails the cultural and ecological systems that mediate human experience and provide resources for coping and meaning making. Furthermore, the detection of traumatic stress disorder implies that the stressful event has overtaxed personal and, in some cases, community capacities. It follows that in considering cultural and ecological factors in the understanding of trauma and trauma recovery, both community resources for resilience and personal resources for coping that are appropriated from culture should be assessed. This emphasis on the cultural and the ecological is in response to the limitations of individually focused western conceptions of trauma and concerns about medicalized approaches to trauma intervention that insufficiently account for contextual factors in trauma recovery (Argenti-Pullen, 2000; Burstow, 2003; Summerfield, 2004).</text>

<text>This dissertation in practice (DIP) uses a quantitative survey research design to understand the impact of the teacher education program (TEP) at Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) on preservice teachers’ cultural proficiency growth. This research is important because the racial and ethnic diversity of the nation’s public school student population places additional responsibility on teacher preparation programs to help prepare culturally proficient teachers. The review of the research literature reflects the positive impact teacher education programs have on improving the culturally responsive teaching and classroom management efficacy of preservice teachers. Servant leadership was studied as a leadership lens for the development of preservice teachers as culturally proficient educators. The research methodology involved surveying preservice teachers in different stages within the TEP and analyzing differences in their responses to understand the potential influence of the TEP. Although statistical significance could not be claimed, the findings reflect preservice teachers with more TEP experience reported higher culturally responsive teaching efficacy than those with less TEP experience, while those with less TEP experience reported higher culturally responsive classroom management efficacy. The proposed solutions include embedding multiple opportunities for preservice teachers to reflect on their culturally responsive teaching and classroom management efficacy throughout their TEP progression and giving them more time to practice culturally responsive teaching and classroom management strategies.</text>

<text>This book adopts a human ecology approach to present an overview of the biological responses to social, political, economic, cultural and environmental changes that affected human populations in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, since the Classic Maya Period. Human bodies express social relations, and we can read these relations by analyzing biological tissues or systems, and by measuring certain phenotypical traits at the population level. Departing from this theoretical premise, the contributors to this volume analyze the interactions between ecosystems, sociocultural systems and human biology in a specific geographic region to show how changes in sociocultural and natural environment affect the health of a population over time. </text>

<text>This book takes a deeper look into the darker side of the human condition by examining the psyches of those who have been victims or survivors of heinous acts perpetrated by others. From the “personal Holocaust” of sexual abuse in the family, to the genocidal persecution during “the” Holocaust, and from the shared national horror of September 11 to the Palestinian/Israeli situation, a special model of the traumatized mind is evolved to further our understanding of such “dark matters”. The traditional models of the mind fall short when dealing with extraordinary people under ordinary conditions as well as with ordinary people under extraordinary conditions.</text>

<text>This article focuses on social work research with displaced families in the Western Cape, South Africa, who have experienced both the historical trauma of their slave past and the trauma of displacement during apartheid. In a similar context, aboriginal academic writers have found that initial studies of intergenerational trauma did not take into account the historical ordeal of colonialism which they believe has left its mark on aboriginal communities today. Intergenerational trauma has also been based on research with holocaust survivors. For this research paper, a postcolonial indigenous research paradigm was implemented owing to the colonial history of Cape Town. Collective narrative practice and participatory learning action techniques were used to decolonise the theoretical and methodological approach. Foucault’s counter-memories and counter-histories were applied to critically engage with the research findings to include the “unofficial” stories of slave descendants in social work discourse where these stories have largely been ignored.</text>

<text>This study explores how professional Indigenous women respond to the presentation of survey data on sexual assault in a conference setting. Sexual assault survey data presented within the context of colonization can provide a platform for Indigenous women to speak out. This study centers the voices of Indigenous women as central for understanding issues of prevalence. Indigenous women are situated in difficult intersections because solidarity to stand united against ongoing colonial influences with fellow community members and engage decolonization efforts often come at a high cost of keeping silent about their victimization. Understanding the unique position Indigenous women occupy is critical to understanding the dynamics surrounding speaking out and seeking justice for survivors after sexual assault.</text>

<text>Background: Individuals experiencing socioeconomic inequity have worse health outcomes
and face barriers to palliative and end-of-life care. There is a need to develop palliative care
programs tailored to this underserved population.
Objectives: To understand the characteristics and symptom profiles of a group of urban
patients experiencing socioeconomic inequity and receiving palliative care.
Design: Descriptive exploratory analysis of a patient dataset. The patient dataset was
generated through a pilot research study with patients experiencing socioeconomic inequity
and life-limiting illness who received a community-based palliative care intervention.
Methods: The intervention took place over 1year in the Palliative Care Outreach and Advocacy
Team, a community-based urban palliative care clinic in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, serving
persons experiencing socioeconomic inequity. Participants had to be at least 18 years of age,
be able to communicate in English, require palliative care for a life-limiting illness, and be
able to consent to inclusion in the study.
Results: Twenty-five participants were enrolled. Participants predominantly identified as male
and Indigenous, experienced poverty and housing instability, and had metastatic cancer. Our
participants rated their pain, shortness of breath, and anxiety as more severe than the broader
community-based palliative care population in the same city. Most patients died in inpatient
hospices (73%).
Conclusion: Our analysis provides an in-depth picture of an understudied, underserved
population requiring palliative care. Given the higher symptom severity experienced by
participants, our analysis highlights the importance of person-centered palliative care.
We suggest that socioeconomic inequity should be considered in patients with life-limiting
illnesses. Further research is needed to explore palliative care delivery to those facing
socioeconomic inequity.</text>

<text>Grief research among American Indian (AI) and Alaska Native (AN) people has been limited to studies on historical trauma and elevated mortality rates among AI/ANs. A lack of validated measures is one barrier to grief research with AI/ANs. Therefore, we conducted three studies to develop and validate a culturally congruent measure of grief. In Study 1, interviews were conducted with 12 AI reservation-based community members to understand perspectives on grief. In Study 2, AI/AN community members (n = 10) and professionals (n = 7) provided feedback on measure items adapted or developed in Study 1. In Study 3, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses using separate randomly selected samples from a web-based survey of 600 AI/ANs were conducted to identify the factor structure of the Complicated and Adaptive Grief Inventory for Native Americans (CAGI-NA). Findings suggest that the resulting 30-item CAGI-NA is valid, reliable, and suitable for use in research with AI/AN people.</text>

<text>The purpose of this study was to understand if American Indian adults with diabetes in the Midwest are similar to American Indian adults nationally in their self-management behaviors. This cross-sectional survey was conducted from May 2009 to April 2010 at powwows, health fairs, and other community events. The convenience sample self-selected into the study and answered questions via touch screen computer about diabetes self-management. Participants were significantly below the national average for American Indians in their adherence to self-management recommendations in daily foot checks (p=0.0035) and having had a dilated eye exam in the previous year (p=0.0002), despite being significantly more likely to have taken a diabetes self-management class (p<0.0001). They were similar to the national average for daily glucose checks and having had one or more hemoglobin A1C tests in the previous year. Participants were less likely to eat 5 or more servings of fruits or vegetables per day (p=0.0001), but more likely to achieve 150 minutes or more of physical activity per week (p=0.0001). Programs addressing self-care issues should be developed to help improve the self-management habits of American Indian adults with diabetes, with particular attention to activities outside of monitoring blood glucose and hemoglobin A1C levels.</text>
