<text>The construction of illness as an inscription on the body of colonization figures importantly among Indigenous community-based service and health care providers. While residential schools and diabetes have both been characterized as products of colonization, little work has been done to examine how they are connected to and informative for health provider practice. The research data presented in this article come from a collaborative urban Indigenous community-based study examining the legacy of negative relationships with food that was instilled in residential schools and used in diabetes intervention. I illustrate how residential school disciplined eating, providing a context for understanding the contemporary production of Indigenous health knowledge and practice in the urban setting, and the diet-related management of diabetes.</text>

<text>Focusing on the novels and films of daughters and sons of Holocaust survivors, this book sheds light on the relationship between the Holocaust and contemporary Jewish identity. It is the first systematic analysis of a body of work that introduces a new generation of Jewish writers and filmmakers, as well as revealing how the survivors’ legacy is shaping–and being shaped by–the second generation.

Carefully studying the work of these contemporary children of Job, Berger demonstrates how the offspring, like the survivors themselves, represent a variety of orientations to Judaism, have significant theological differences, and share the legacy of the Shoah. Berger clearly shows that members of the second generation participate fully in both the American and Jewish dimensions of their identity and articulates distinctive second-generation theological and psychosocial themes.</text>

<text>Turkey has gone through significant transformations over the last century—from the Ottoman Empire and Young Turk era to the Republic of today—but throughout it has demonstrated troubling continuities in its encouragement and deployment of mass violence. In particular, the construction of a Muslim-Turkish identity has been achieved in part by designating “internal enemies” at whom public hatred can be directed. This volume provides a wide range of case studies and historiographical reflections on the alarming recurrence of such violence in Turkish history, as atrocities against varied ethnic-religious groups from the nineteenth century to today have propelled the nation’s very sense of itself.</text>

<text>Although trauma is usually examined as an individual experience, it is a collective dynamic. Whole communities are traumatized and dynamics of trauma involve all of us and affect the course of history. An orientation to understanding trauma is needed that is at once personal, communal and political. This paper discusses why understanding the dynamics of trauma is essential for facilitators of conflict resolution in zones of conflict and for post‐war reconciliation and community building. It also considers that, in addition to international tribunals and truth commissions, there is a need for community forums throughout society to work with issues of accountability and collective trauma concerning past and current conflicts. Trauma is also relevant to such issues as understanding dynamics of revenge, the silence accompanying atrocity, and historical revisionism. Copyright © 2004 Whurr Publishers Ltd.</text>

<text>Violence is considered a global mental health problem. The rate of violence in South Africa is amongst the highest in the world and much of this violence is disproportionately skewed towards the poorer and historically disadvantaged communities. Low-income communities continue to bear the brunt of historical legacies of violence which are perpetuated through current ongoing cycles of interpersonal and community violence. While much has been documented about trauma and resilience in environments where the violence or traumatic event has ceased, there is a dearth of literature conceptualising trauma and resilience in contexts where the violence persists. Furthermore, even fewer studies have captured how trauma and resilience are conceptualised from the perspectives of the voices who experience this violence daily. </text>

<text>Native American (NA) students in the Oakland Unified School District of CA are exposed to SEL curriculums at their schools. Adolescents can find it difficult to engage in therapeutic services especially if it was not their choice to participate in those services. Therapeutic services can carry a stigma for many Native Americans due to historical trauma. Group therapy provides a further challenge for adolescents as self-disclosure may be intimidating in a room full of peers especially if the therapist is non-native. This study used culturally responsive cinematherapy to assess its relevance as a mode of treatment with adolescents in a group setting. Interviews were conducted with nine NA adolescents from the Bay Area who have watched the television show Reservation Dogs to assess its efficacy for group therapy and its ability to demonstrate SEL competencies. Six NA adults were also surveyed through three focus group sessions where they were shown clips of the show and asked the same questions to assess for possible differences among age cohorts. In addition, both groups were asked questions about the health needs of Native Americans in general. Results from the study were analyzed through thematic analysis and ten themes were developed. Results could be helpful for therapists developing future programs and for future areas of research. </text>

<text>Despite low life expectancy, high suicide and homicide rates, and excessive levels of poverty and violence, American Indians continue to survive. However, few researchers have assessed the correlates of resilience among adult American Indians. Current researchers assessing American Indian resilience have focused primarily on adolescents and preadolescents, resulting in a definition of resilience that is more often than not defined by the lack of negative youth outcomes. In this quantitative survey study, data were collected from 103 American Indians living off-reservation in a northwestern state. Gender, age, education level, degree of enculturation (using the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure), level of stressful life events (using the Life Events Checklist) were tested using linear regression as potential predictors of resilience (measured with the Resilience Scale). Results suggested that higher enculturation was associated with higher resilience; other predictors were not statistically related to resilience. It was surprising that the data did not support a relationship between trauma and lowered resilience. Implications for positive social change include understanding more clearly the role of enculturation in resilience; such knowledge can be used to foster activities that value local culture and can have a positive impact on mental and physical health.</text>

<text>This Dissertation-in-Practice (DiP) addresses a problem of practice which is an urgent need for enhanced mental health supports at Alpine Prairie Middle School (APMS) within the Western Canadian School District (WCSD). Amidst resource and budgetary constraints, this study explores holistically informed strategies grounded in the principal's positionality and grounded by critical theory. This DiP focusses on transformative and distributed leadership approaches, considering the school as a complex adaptive system. A leadership framework integrates critical theory, transformative leadership, distributed leadership, and pragmatism to effectively lead the change process. The implementation plan includes a four-step change model: awakening, mobilization, acceleration, and institutionalization, tailored for APMS. This model aligns the organization with changes involving mental health literacy (MHL) and transformative social emotional learning (tSEL), managing the transition smoothly. Comprehensive communication and evaluation plans ensure successful integration of change strategies into the school's operations, supporting and improving students' mental health. Adopting a holistic approach, emphasizing equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization (EDID), this DiP describes a supportive and resilient environment where every student can thrive. This DiP also emphasizes the importance of a proactive stance on student mental health, the need for ongoing professional development for educators, and the value of involving the entire school community in mental health initiatives. By addressing these critical areas, the DiP seeks to create a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for all students at APMS. The findings may also inform future initiatives to improve mental health supports in middle schools.</text>

<text>Native American youth face a number of challenges that affect their academic success and wellbeing. In schools, Native American youth are presented with textbooks that include stereotyped and distorted information about their peoples’ history. However, there is a gap in the literature showing whether these textbooks contain microaggressive statements. The current study is a qualitative inquiry into five Montana history that explores the following questions: The first, are there microaggressions in history textbooks used across Montana, and the second – if there are microaggressions, what are those themes? Results of this study indicate that these books included 96 microinvalidations, 54 microinsults, and 11 microassaults. The themes of these microaggressive statements expanded beyond Sanchez’s (2007) original themes. In turn, this study discusses the results from a perspective of White privilege, and how educational consultants can help combat this prejudice engrained in curriculum.</text>

<text>Introduction: Many Indigenous peoples take a wholistic approach to health and well-being which includes cultural, social, mental, and physical aspects of health. Improved physical activity (PA) and decreased sedentary behaviours (SB) have been shown to attenuate the risk of many chronic diseases. As Indigenous populations experience elevated risks for chronic diseases, PA and SB may be ideal targets for Indigenous health-related interventions. To date, little research is available on the sociocultural determinants of PA or SB in Indigenous peoples.
Objective: The objective of this study is to examine possible cultural and social determinants of PA and SB among Indigenous populations.
Methods: This research study followed the methodologies outlined in Chapter 9 of the Tri-Council Policy Statement 2, while also using a decolonizing lens, taking a strength-based approach, and overseen by an Indigenous community advisory group. Participants were self-identified, Indigenous students, staff, and faculty and were given the option of taking an online survey or interviewer administered survey. Factors evaluated were PA, SB, cultural connectedness, discriminatory experiences, social support, family influences, historic trauma, education, income, tobacco and alcohol use, home residence, sex, and gender.
Results: Indigenous students, staff, and faculty participated in this study for a total sample of 124 people. Cultural connectedness was positively associated with PA in First Nations and Cree participants but negatively associated in Métis participants. Social support was found to be positively associated with muscle strengthening activities. Physical activity of participants who experienced, or had a family member experience, residential school or foster care was influenced by this historic trauma. Overall Indigenous participant’s PA was negatively associated with living in a northern community and being female. Métis peoples who were more physically active were found to be less sedentary. Overall Indigenous participant’s SB were negatively associated with discriminatory experiences, income, and living off-reserve. No associations between PA or SB were found when examining education, tobacco and alcohol use, and gender.
Conclusion: Cultural connectedness, discriminatory experiences, social support, family influences, historic trauma, income, home residence, and sex seem to be determinants of PA and/or SB; while education, tobacco and alcohol use, and gender do not.</text>
