<text>Abstract: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase vulnerability to internalizing symptoms, namely symptoms characterized primarily by processes within the self, such as anxiety and depression, but the underlying processes are still unclear. One possible mechanism is that ACEs alter the neural correlates responsible for the preferential processing unpleasant stimuli, a key feature of anxiety. Another mechanism could be a stress-induced disruption in the processing of pleasant stimuli, which is mostly linked with depressive symptoms. In this study, we examined how ACEs and neural correlates of different emotional processing stages (affective engagement, anticipation, elaboration) interact in the association with internalizing symptoms in a sample of university students (n = 46, 28 females). Participants completed the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACE-Q), and the anxiety and depression subscale of the Brief Symptoms Inventory Checklist to assess depression and anxiety. An S1-S2 paradigm, a task in which a cue (S1) anticipates the valence of a succeeding emotional image (S2), was used during an electroencephalographic (EEG) recording. Three event-related potentials (ERPs) reflecting different stages of emotional processing were assessed: the Cue-P300 (reflecting cue-evaluation and affective engagement), the Stimulus Preceding Negativity (SPN; reflecting outcome anticipation), and the P300/late positive potential (LPP) complex (reflecting affective processing). ACEs were linked to greater P300/LPP for unpleasant stimuli, suggesting that childhood adversities may be related to increased elaboration of threatening information. Moreover, ACEs were associated with dampened engagement (Cue-P300) and processing (P300/LPP) of pleasant content. Interestingly, the interaction between the P300/LPP to unpleasant stimuli and ACEs was significantly associated with greater symptoms of anxiety, whereas there was no effect in the link with depression. Specifically, individuals exposed to ACEs only reported heightened anxiety symptoms when their P300/LPP complex to unpleasant stimuli was larger. No significant effect emerged for the other ERPs components. Taken together, these findings suggest that an increased sensitivity to unpleasant content in adulthood might moderate the association between ACEs and anxiety symptoms.</text>

<text>Background Among children under the age of 18, approximately 58 % report experiencing one or more adverse childhood experience (ACE). Exposure to ACEs is consequential for children's development and increases risk of poor physical and mental health outcomes across the lifespan. Resilience science suggests that protective factors within a child's social ecology can mitigate the impact of ACEs on outcomes. Objective The current study examines how personal and caregiver protective factors moderate the association between cumulative ACEs and child trauma symptoms in a sample of children receiving psychological services for maltreatment. Methods A retrospective file review of 71 participants aged 8 to 17 (M age = 12.6, SD = 2.5, 78.6 % girls) seen at a child and youth advocacy centre was conducted. Participants also completed questionnaires to assess trauma symptoms and protective factors. Results Analyses revealed that children's personal protective factors, such as perceived peer support, internal locus of control, and future orientation (r = −0.51, p < .001), as well as caregiver protective factors (r = −0.39, p = .010), were negatively correlated with their trauma symptoms. Furthermore, child personal protective factors were found to moderate the association between ACEs and trauma symptoms (β = −1.84, p = .036), suggesting that these factors mitigate the risk of cumulative ACEs. Caregiver protective factors did not moderate this association (β = −0.5, p = .700). Conclusions This study highlights the importance of embedding intrapersonal and interpersonal skills training in trauma-based intervention programs and encourages further research into the impacts of protective factors at different phases of child development.</text>

<text>Sexual minority individuals experience persistently elevated risks of internalizing psychopathology and suicidality, to which increased exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs; i.e., negative life experiences and circumstances before age 18) might contribute. In a population-based nationally representative sample, this study investigated sexual orientation identity differences in ACEs and whether these differences statistically mediated sexual minority disparities in depression, anxiety, and suicidality. We also explored gender non-conformity as a potential contributor to sexual orientation differences in ACEs. A pre-registered, cross-sectional analysis was conducted with 19,421 participants ages ≥16 years randomly sampled from Sweden's population registry with questionnaire-based exposures and outcomes. Compared to heterosexual participants, all sexual minority subgroups were more likely to experience ≥1 ACE: bisexual women (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.96, 95 % confidence interval [CI] [2.23, 3.83]), lesbian women (aOR = 2.19, 95 % CI [1.32, 3.63], gay men (aOR = 1.97, 95 % CI [1.38, 2.81]), and bisexual men (aOR = 1.60, 95 % CI [1.18, 2.17]). All sexual minority subgroups experienced higher odds of bullying, domestic violence, adverse neighborhood experiences, and physical neglect. ACEs statistically mediated associations between sexual minority identity and depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempt; indirect effects were significant for all sexual minority subgroups (aORs = 1.11–1.34), explaining 13–41 % of increased risk, across groups and outcomes. Gender non-conformity partially statistically accounted (10–15 % decrease in regression coefficients) for bullying and emotional abuse disparities. We conclude that disproportionate ACE exposure may partially explain elevated mental health problems among sexual minority individuals, especially bisexual women.</text>

<text>Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) exposure, perceived discrimination, and anxiety and depressive symptoms in sexual and gender minoritized (SGM) adults in the United States. Methods: Respondents (n = 4445) from a national Qualtrics research panel completed a web-based survey. Guided by the stress proliferation (mediation model) and stress sensitization (moderation model) models, we examined the relationships between ACEs and perceived discrimination and the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms in adulthood. Results: Cumulative ACEs exposure was positively associated with everyday discrimination scale (EDS) scores. ACEs and EDS scores had a significant direct association with anxiety and depressive symptoms. We found support for EDS as a mediator for anxiety (β = 0.12, p < 0.001) and depressive symptoms (β = 0.14, p < 0.001) and for ACEs as a moderator of the relationship between EDS and anxiety (β = −0.04, p = 0.004) and depressive (β = −0.05, p = 0.001) symptoms. Conclusions: These findings suggest that both stress proliferation and stress sensitization likely contribute to disparities in anxiety and depressive symptoms in SGM adults. This finding supports the integration of social safety and minority stress perspectives regarding health disparities in SGM populations. Exposure to early life adversity likely alters neurodevelopment, which in turn increases awareness of the lack of social safety in adulthood, reduces capacity to cope with minority stress exposure, and ultimately contributes to increased anxiety and depressive symptoms. Prevention efforts should focus on building positive and compensatory childhood experiences.</text>

<text>Sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth are at increased risk for trauma-related psychopathology (e.g., posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, suicidality) relative to heterosexual and cisgender youth. These disparities have been documented across the globe and are due, in large part, to disproportionate exposure to adverse childhood experiences and other traumatic stressors as well as exposure to unique identity-related stressors. Despite the number of evidence-based interventions for trauma-exposed youth in general, very few have been tested in samples of SGM youth. The goal of this chapter is to provide clinicians with an overview of the literatures on SGM youth’s experiences of trauma and identity-related stressors, their impacts on trauma-related psychopathology, and the use of trauma-focused therapies with SGM youth. This chapter also provides recommendations for the assessment of trauma and minority stress among SGM youth, the inclusion of parents/guardians in the assessment and treatment process, and additional considerations to be mindful of when working with trauma-exposed SGM youth.</text>

<text>Kindness Through Africentricity: Living as Caring Human Beings draws on Africentric philosophy, the principles of Ubuntu, and intersectionality to offer a groundbreaking exploration of kindness within African Nova Scotian communities. This volume challenges conventional understandings by positioning kindness not only as a moral virtue, but as a powerful and transformative force rooted in cultural, communal, and historical contexts. It bridges theory and lived experience, providing a critical Africentric perspective that invites readers to consider kindness as both a personal ethic and a communal practice. As part of the Kindness at Work series, this interdisciplinary collection brings together scholars and community leaders of African ancestry in Nova Scotia to examine kindness through educational, organizational, and cultural lenses. It offers practical strategies for implementing Africentricity in education and community contexts, while also contributing to the growing but still underexplored field of kindness in management and organizational studies. By centering African Nova Scotian voices and experiences, Kindness Through Africentricity expands the theoretical scope of kindness and reclaims it as a valuable, strategic, and culturally grounded approach to leadership, learning, and community-building.</text>

Japanese-American correspondent Leslie Nakashima, who had spent the war in Japan, traveled to Hiroshima in late August to search for his mother and filed a dispatch with United Press on August 27, 1945, that was the first widespread report about the scale of devastation.</text>

<text>Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to expand the literature on ageism by exploring the phenomenon of age-related microaggressions. Research Design and Methods: Fifty-one participants completed an online survey asking a series of questions about their experiences with microaggressions related to their age. Responses were summarized using a thematic analysis. Results: Participants reported frequently experiencing age-related microaggressions, particularly microinsults. Microaggressions occurred in a variety of settings, often by individuals unfamiliar to the older adult. Although most participants reported having negative emotional reactions to microaggression and believing these acts are intentional, in most cases, perpetrators are not confronted. Discussion and Implications: Our hope is this descriptive study will serve as a foundational framework for conducting future exploration on age-related microaggressions and their effects on older adults and society at large.</text>

<text>Objective: This study investigated associations between social network characteristics and alcohol and cannabis use among non–reservation-living American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) emerging adults (18–25 years old), with a focus on the potential protective influence of AI/AN traditional practices (e.g., dancing, storytelling, beading). Method: The study used a multilevel, multivariable dyadic approach to analyze personal network composition and network connectivity (centrality and density) from 470 AI/AN emerging adults living in nonreservation areas across the United States. Eligible participants completed an online survey, which included questions about social networks and alcohol and cannabis use. Results: Findings indicated that network members who were similar in age, perceived to be friends, and lived nearby were more likely to be alcohol and cannabis use partners. Network members who shared AI/AN identity but did not engage in traditional practices were more likely to be alcohol and cannabis use partners than non-AI/AN network members. Analysis of network density demonstrated that having highly connected networks was associated with lower odds of respondents engaging in alcohol and cannabis use with members of their networks. However, highly central network members had higher odds of alcohol and cannabis use with respondents than those who were less central. Findings were robust when controlling for respondent and network alcohol and cannabis use. Conclusions: The study underscores the significance of the network context of alcohol and cannabis use for nonreservation AI/AN emerging adults. The protective role of traditional AI/AN practices highlights the importance of strength-based intervention approaches that promote healthy social connections and traditional practices. Future research should test hypotheses longitudinally to inform more effective prevention strategies.</text>

<text>Among adults with mental illness, 18.9% or 11 million individuals have co-occurring alcohol use disorder (AUD).1 Yet, only 8% of individuals with AUD receive treatment, and less than 2% receive medications for alcohol use disorder (MAUD).1 MAUD in particular has been shown to decrease drinking and associated harms from alcohol use.2 Among those with co-occurring disorders, remission from both conditions is more likely if each condition is treated.3 One approach to increase treatment access is to integrate alcohol treatments into behavioral health care settings. Our objective is to assess whether specialty mental health facilities offer treatment for AUD to patients with co-occurring mental health disorders and AUD.</text>

<text>Sensory symptoms are highly prevalent amongst autistic individuals and are now considered in the diagnostic criteria. Whilst evidence suggests a genetic relationship between autism and sensory symptoms, sensory symptoms are neither universal within autism nor unique to autism. One explanation for the heterogeneity within autism and commonality across conditions with respect to sensory symptoms, is that it is alexithymia (a condition associated with difficulties identifying and describing one’s own emotions) that has a genetic relationship with sensory symptoms, and that alexithymia commonly co-occurs with autism and with several other conditions. Using parent-reports of symptoms in a sample of adolescent twins, we sought to examine the genetic association between autism, alexithymia and sensory symptoms. Results showed that the genetic correlation between autism and sensory symptoms was not significant after controlling for alexithymia. In contrast, after controlling for variance in alexithymia explained by autism, the genetic correlation between alexithymia and sensory symptoms was significant (and the proportion of variance explained by genetic factors remained consistent after controlling for autism). These results suggest that 1) alexithymia and sensory symptoms share aetiology that is not accounted for by their association with autism and 2) that the genetic association between sensory symptoms and autism may be, in part or wholly, a product of alexithymia. Future research should seek to examine the contribution of alexithymia to sensory symptoms across other conditions.</text>
