<text>This chapter focuses on how the effects of experiencing trauma are transmitted within and across generations, and how whole communities can be affected by a single experience of trauma by a single member of a community. The chapter introduces the reader to a selection of views and conceptions of trauma, theories of its transgenerational transfer, an explanation of the impact of lived or transferred trauma in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities, and an overview of dysfunctional community syndrome. It also explores the links between unresolved childhood trauma and participation in violence, sexually inappropriate behaviour, and incarceration as adolescents and adults. The second part of the chapter discusses the challenges associated with working in Indigenous communities; it provides an example of a program that is achieving positive results through education and community empowerment, and an appreciation of the need to embed trauma-recovery in all facets of service provision.</text>

<text>This research explores the contention that the history of widespread traumatic stressors
and the generational transmission of these traumatic stressors throughout the Australian
Aboriginal population are manifested in a series of social problems. The high levels of
violence we are now witnessing in some Aboriginal families and communities, which in
turn contribute to the high incarceration rates of Aboriginal men for violent crimes, are
seen as one of the most serious symptoms resulting from these traumatic stressors.
This research aimed to establish if Aboriginal men who are considered violent have
histories of traumatic stressors and demonstrate psychological symptoms associated
with trauma stress, as well as whether they have experienced generational patterns of
traumatic stressors and dysfunction. </text>

<text>This qualitative research study explores the meanings of Eldership and eldering in a local urban Native American community in the Greater Boston Area. Studies regarding older Native Americans often use “older adult” and “elder” synonymously. By relegating aging to simply a “chronological pace,” researchers assume that Native communities view time and the transition into elderhood as an independent physiological experience, when alternative understandings may exist. Urban Native Americans may not have ties to the land they live on, are separated from the culture and traditions of their tribal members on reservations, and are consumed by the dominating modality of their colonizer. However, an urban Native community continues to exist in the Greater Boston Area in Massachusetts. This in part is due to the persistent efforts of elders within the community over time who elder-in-place: they maintain networks and pass down knowledge to younger generations within a co-constructed shared space.</text>

<text>Changing food retail environment in Southeast Asia has been linked with nutrition transition. While policy on food retail tends to focus on economic considerations, little is known about how nutrition considerations are integrated. This paper examines the landscape of policies addressing food retail and health in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand to inform global nutrition targets. Food retail policy landscapes in the study countries were thematically analyzed using Walt & Gilson's Policy Analysis Triangle framework. The analysis revealed that food retail policies were predominantly shaped by health, economic development, and politics, with nutrition maintaining low salience and being subsumed within food safety considerations. The study countries represented a complex food policy landscape requiring inter-sectoral collaboration and multi-level governance, yet formal monitoring mechanisms and evidence remained limited. This study recommends developing a comprehensive regional-level roadmap to support healthy food retail initiatives. By aligning nutrition priorities with existing economic and health governance systems, countries can better implement nutrition-sensitive retail policies.</text>

<text>The first-ever comprehensive report on the sleep health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (hereafter referred to as First Nations Australians) highlighted an 18% prevalence of poor sleep in First Nations youth. While sleep health is important across the lifespan, adolescence is a critical life stage with increased vulnerability to poor sleep. In adolescents, pubertal changes, social and academic commitments, and peer pressure significantly increase the risk of poor sleep, which often results in social and emotional well-being (SEWB) issues. In First Nations adolescents, high rates of SEWB issues demand effective prevention and management strategies. Evidence from non-First Nations adolescents suggests that timely prevention, identification, diagnosis, and management of poor sleep help reduce the risk and severity of SEWB issues in First Nations adolescents. A research program is proposed to be called “Let’s Yarn About Sleep,” which will co-design, deliver, and evaluate a tailored sleep improvement program for Australian First Nations adolescents (12–18 years). Co-design workshops will be conducted with First Nations community Elders, parents and carers, youth, and First Nations service providers to develop the sleep health program. The program will also include training Aboriginal Youth Workers (AYWs) to deliver the sleep health program. The program evaluation will be based on a mixed methods design, using self-reported (survey tools and focus group discussions) and technology-based measures (actigraphy data) to measure changes in First Nations adolescents’ sleep and SEWB. The evaluation will focus on the impact of training AYWs on program delivery and uptake.</text>

              <text>Purpose
Adolescents facing maltreatment are at an increased risk for negative outcomes, yet Child Protective Services (CPS) interventions are less frequent for this age group. Clarifying the concerns leading to neglect allegations is crucial to enhancing CPS responses and support for adolescents. This study examines the types and contributors to reports of adolescent neglect.
Methods
A random sample of 993 CPS referrals (2017–2019) from California was analyzed. Data included structured and unstructured elements, categorizing adolescent and family concerns such as parental substance use, domestic violence, adolescent behavior, and mental health.
Results
Neglect allegations were predominately related to adolescent behavior concerns (44%) and the adolescent's mental health (31%). Suicidality was noted in 31% of mental health-related referrals, accounting for 1 in 10 referrals overall. Parental substance use and lack of protection were commonly denoted family concerns.
Discussion
Adolescents referred for neglect are often facing acute behavior and mental health challenges, necessitating improved access to mental health services and direct adolescent engagement in care.</text>

<text>Building Resilience and Attachment in Vulnerable Adolescents (BRAVA) is a brief virtual group intervention designed for adolescents with mild to moderate suicidal ideation (SI) and their caregivers. The goal of BRAVA is to reduce SI in adolescents and increase family connection. The intervention consists of six independent, 90 minute modules that are delivered in a group setting on a weekly basis. Independent modules allow for rolling admission thereby reducing wait time to start the intervention. The modules include components of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Attachment Based Family Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Collaborative Problem Solving and psychoeducation. Adolescents and their parents attend separate groups. Adolescents focus on emotional regulation, coping skills, managing crisis situations and caregivers focus on connecting with their teen, validation and crisis management.</text>

<text>In 1994, over a hundred days, more than a million Tutsis were killed in a genocide that tore Rwanda apart. Three decades later, one hundred Rwandan storytellers reflect on what happened and how they have carried on living in the aftermath of catastrophe. These are not full testimonies, but instead searing insights into particularly vivid memories, decisions and moments of change. They take us to the core of what it means to be human in the face of violence and death. Editor Jo Ingabire Moys is herself a child survivor of genocide. Gathering together these different perspectives - one for every day of the killings - helps her make sense of Rwanda's past. We hear from survivors, rescuers, perpetrators, returnees and their children. These are the stories of Rwanda, told by Rwandans to other Rwandans: stories of the past in the present, and remaining connected today.</text>

<text>In the theories of Durkheim which focusses mostly on consensus and equilibrium within society, genocide is a problematic phenomenon. Even though violent is not absent in his theoretical framework, it always has a function, a reason, mainly to establish cohesion in a society that is in essence divided in labor and religion. Violence for violence, excluding groups and persecuting groups for who they are is simply not studied in detail within his consensus centered sociology. So how could we study genocide within his framework? How can we start to analyze genocide through Durkheim’s glasses. How could we explain something that is so disruptive in nature. In this article I try to answer this question by looking at certain elements within his theories, but also by studying the importance of sacralization as studied and analyzed by Mauss, Hubert and in some instances Durkheim himself. Here we may find that genocide may not exist outside the mechanisms of society but may have a function within.</text>

<text>Cultural safety and effective communication are essential to equitable quality healthcare. Cultural safety requires critical reflection - an active
process which can be transformative when it supports a shift from awareness to practice change. Australian government departments,
training organisations and regulation authorities require healthcare providers to complete cultural safety training but methods for effectively
teaching critical reflection are not well described and evidence for their impact is limited. In Australia’s Northern Territory, a culturally safe
communication training program called Ask the Specialist Plus (ATS+) was delivered as part of the Communicate Study Partnership. This
study documents healthcare provider reflections on this locally-designed training.
