<text>North Central New Mexico (the Valley) has the highest per capita accidental drug overdose death rate in the United States: From 42 to 72 per 100,000 from 1995 to 2006; the USA rate is about 5 per 100,000. This book examines the social forces – race, religion, class, and gender structures – that underpin the epidemic of overdose deaths in the Valley. The 34 interviews of active drug users and 10 interviews of family members and professionals are iteratively analyzed via sociological concepts and literature – Anomic Suicide, post-Marxism, current sociological drug addiction theory, colonialism, historical/cultural trauma, racial and ethnic inequality, and autoethnography. Research design employed both qualitative and quantitative data from the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator. This mixed method allowed for the triangulation of disparate data. Amongst the profiles of suicide and overdose victims significant overlap was found. Colonization and street-level trauma appear to create a variant of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder termed Cultural-post traumatic stress disorder resulting in high incidence of morbidity and mortality amongst Hispanics in the Valley.</text>

<text>Research efforts during the past decades have provided intriguing evidence suggesting that stressful experiences during pregnancy exert long-term consequences on the future mental wellbeing of both the mother and her baby. Recent human epidemiological and animal studies indicate that stressful experiences in utero or during early life may increase the risk of neurological and psychiatric disorders, arguably via altered epigenetic regulation. Epigenetic mechanisms, such as miRNA expression, DNA methylation, and histone modifications are prone to changes in response to stressful experiences and hostile environmental factors. Altered epigenetic regulation may potentially influence fetal endocrine programming and brain development across several generations. Only recently, however, more attention has been paid to possible transgenerational effects of stress. In this review we discuss the evidence of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance of stress exposure in human studies and animal models. We highlight the complex interplay between prenatal stress exposure, associated changes in miRNA expression and DNA methylation in placenta and brain and possible links to greater risks of schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, anxiety- or depression-related disorders later in life. Based on existing evidence, we propose that prenatal stress, through the generation of epigenetic alterations, becomes one of the most powerful influences on mental health in later life. The consideration of ancestral and prenatal stress effects on lifetime health trajectories is critical for improving strategies that support healthy development and successful aging.</text>

<text>Turkey has gone through significant transformations over the last century—from the Ottoman Empire and Young Turk era to the Republic of today—but throughout it has demonstrated troubling continuities in its encouragement and deployment of mass violence. In particular, the construction of a Muslim-Turkish identity has been achieved in part by designating “internal enemies” at whom public hatred can be directed. This volume provides a wide range of case studies and historiographical reflections on the alarming recurrence of such violence in Turkish history, as atrocities against varied ethnic-religious groups from the nineteenth century to today have propelled the nation’s very sense of itself.</text>

<text>This book adopts a human ecology approach to present an overview of the biological responses to social, political, economic, cultural and environmental changes that affected human populations in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, since the Classic Maya Period. Human bodies express social relations, and we can read these relations by analyzing biological tissues or systems, and by measuring certain phenotypical traits at the population level. Departing from this theoretical premise, the contributors to this volume analyze the interactions between ecosystems, sociocultural systems and human biology in a specific geographic region to show how changes in sociocultural and natural environment affect the health of a population over time. </text>

<text>Narrative research has not traditionally examined the intergenerational transmission and reverberation of narratives within ethnic communities, and yet it is through the chain of generations that voices of the past reverberate and testimonies endure which fuel and form present day notions of the past. This article is a call for and an example of the importance ethnographic investigation into communities of memories, for it is through community storytelling that records are set straight as a memorial for victims and survivors. This line of inquiry is pertinent to various communities throughout the world, as we come to see the role of language, and in particular, narrative in the formation of ideas and conflicts, as scholars such as Slyomovics, (1998) have pointed out. This research takes as its point of departure narrative renditions of the Armenian genocide recounted in both public and private venues by the great-grandchildren of genocide survivors in an ethnic enclave in Central California. In this diasporic community we see how communities of memory are formed in a space of mediation which links the new generation with the old, the present with its past as well as with its imagined communities (Anderson, 1983). Through examination of the linguistic reverberations of this historical and familial narrative, I ask what becomes of authorship when collected stories are salient enough to be included in one’s own personal history, and how these narrativizations contribute to one’s sense of self? These questions are answered both by linguistic analysis of pronouns and deixis, as well as through analysis of prevalent themes. The results of this research lend into the historical progression of memory through time by those who did not experience the trauma, but rather were witnesses by listening to the trauma of others.</text>

<text>Cooperation in organisms, whether bacteria or primates, has been a difficulty for evolutionary theory since Darwin. On the assumption that interactions between pairs of individuals occur on a probabilistic basis, a model is developed based on the concept of an evolutionarily stable strategy in the context of the Prisoner's Dilemma game. Deductions from the model, and the results of a computer tournament show how cooperation based on reciprocity can get started in an asocial world, can thrive while interacting with a wide range of other strategies, and can resist invasion once fully established. Potential applications include specific aspects of territoriality, mating, and disease.</text>

<text>The autobiographical narratives of black ex-slaves published in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries constitute the largest body of literature produced by slaves in human history. Black slaves in the New World created a veritable "literature of escape" depicting the overwhelming horrors of human bondage. These narratives served the abolitionist movement not only as evidence of the slaves' degradation but also of their "intellectual capacity." Accordingly, this literature has elicited a wealth of analysis- and controversy- from its initial publication right up to our day. This volume charts the response to the black slave's narrative from 1750 to the present. The book consists of three sections: selected reviews of slave narratives, dating from 1750 to 1861; essays examining how such narratives serve as historical material; and essays exploring the narratives as literary artifacts</text>

<text>This longitudinal study assesses the trajectories of depressive symptoms and subjective age and the mediating role of guilt in the association between them. Two groups of aging Israeli combat veterans (M age = 57), 128 ex-prisoners of war (ex-POWs), and 106 comparable combat veterans (controls), were assessed at 3 times: 18 (Time 1 [T1]), 30 (Time 2 [T2]), and 35 (Time 3 [T3]) years after the war. They filled out self-report questionnaires on depression, guilt, and subjective age. Results revealed that significantly more ex-POWs had chronic or delayed clinical levels of depressive symptoms than did controls and that chronic and delayed depressive symptoms were associated with a higher subjective age at T3. Furthermore, the path between depressive symptoms at T1 for predicting subjective age at T3 was fully explained by levels of guilt-distress at T2. Although the mediation effect was found in both study groups, it was significantly stronger among ex-POWs than among controls. These findings suggest that not only is depression a long-term sequela of traumatic stress, it is also a risk factor for psychological aging among war veterans. Furthermore, guilt-distress appears to play an important role in advancing subjective age, especially among ex-POWs. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 APA, all rights reserved)</text>

<text>Objective: These studies examined whether exposure to traumatic events at different stages of life would predict posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in old age. Furthermore, the regulating role of perceptions that relate to one’s future time horizons (subjective life expectancy, SLE) and age (subjective age) were also examined. Method and Results: It was hypothesized that exposure to trauma would predict more PTSS, and that this association would be moderated by SLE and subjective age, so that for those with higher SLE and a younger subjective age, exposure to trauma will have a weaker association with PTSS. Study 1 (N = 294) revealed that among Israeli war veterans (mean age 57), those who experienced the trauma of war captivity in the Yom Kippur War reported higher PTSS than comparable veterans, and that the relationship between captivity and PTSS was weaker for those with a higher SLE. Study 2 (N = 339), which was based on older adults who were currently exposed to ongoing rocket fire in the south of Israel (mean age 65), revealed the same pattern of findings: Exposure to rocket fire predicted more PTSS, but this relationship was weaker among those with a higher SLE. Subjective age did not reveal a moderation effect. Conclusions: These findings suggest that different traumatic experiences, whether belonging to one’s past or whether currently ongoing, predict PTSS in later life. Moreover, it appears that subjective time horizons until death, but not subjective age since birth, can buffer against the negative effect of the trauma. <text>Although trauma is usually examined as an individual experience, it is a collective dynamic. Whole communities are traumatized and dynamics of trauma involve all of us and affect the course of history. An orientation to understanding trauma is needed that is at once personal, communal and political. This paper discusses why understanding the dynamics of trauma is essential for facilitators of conflict resolution in zones of conflict and for post‐war reconciliation and community building. It also considers that, in addition to international tribunals and truth commissions, there is a need for community forums throughout society to work with issues of accountability and collective trauma concerning past and current conflicts. Trauma is also relevant to such issues as understanding dynamics of revenge, the silence accompanying atrocity, and historical revisionism. Copyright © 2004 Whurr Publishers Ltd.</text>

<text>This chapter summarizes our current understanding of the many ways massive psychic trauma is known, for central to the response to trauma are the issues of knowing and forgetting. The chapter focuses on the attempt to know, the defenses against knowledge, the different levels of knowing that are possible, the inevitable limits of knowing, and implications for healing. It progresses from an initial focus on survivors of the Holocaust to a later focus on the next generation. The authors briefly address the question of modes of transmission of memory from one generation to the next. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)</text>
