<text>This chapter seeks to examine the ways in which German cities have confronted their past through the study of heritage of Nazi architecture and design since 1945. The author has chosen to use the camera as her study tool through which she is studying Nazi architecture and design today and see them as a reflection of the German Erinnerungskultur (Memory-Culture). In the last decade, the author has travelled all over Germany following the relics of the Nazi era. These photographed journeys have resulted in more than 10,000 frames so far and is still ongoing. The radical changes in German cities after the Allied bombing left fragile urban spaces, and given the circumstances, city authorities, architects, and urban planners wanted to delay the discussion of the Nazi phantoms left behind as long as possible. After reunification, some German cities adopted the solutions discussed in this chapter, which can often be described as a complicated situation. German cities are trying to do the impossible: combining ancient legacies, buildings designed during the Third Reich and left untouched for decades, and modern and postmodern construction. The resulting mixture has a complexity not found anywhere else.</text>

<text>While there are similarities between the combat patients and the non-combat controls, a clear-cut picture emerges of the combat veteran syndrome with a severely disabling condition involving startle reactions, sleep difficulties, dizziness, blackouts, avoidance of activities similar to combat experience, and internalization of feelings. He is not however psychotic.
The achievements of the medical and allied professions especially in dealing with the acute combat cases have been valuable but less and less interest is being shown to this particular group of veterans. In many hospitals and clinics there is no official record kept as to whether a patient was ever in combat. It is suggested that if we are to continue to study this group of patients we must at least keep track of them. Particularly with the recent emphasis on "here and now" in psychotherapy a combat veteran's tendency to avoid discussing his traumatic combat experiences may easily create a tacit agreement between the therapist and the veteran to avoid the subject. We suggest that a continuing and broadening attack on the psychological aspects of these problems is indicated. Such a study will help to clarify our concept of psychoneurosis in general and contribute to the maintenance and improvement of these men.</text>

<text>"A Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and journalist explains, with electrifying clarity, why some of her contemporaries have abandoned liberal democratic ideals in favor of strongman cults, nationalist movements, or one-party states. Across the world today, from the U.S. to Europe and beyond, liberal democracy is under siege while different forms of authoritarianism are on the rise. In Twilight of Democracy, prize-winning historian Anne Applebaum argues that we should not be surprised by this change: There is an inherent appeal to political systems with radically simple beliefs, especially when they benefit the loyal to the exclusion of everyone else. People are not just ideological, she contends in this captivating extended essay; they are also practical, pragmatic, opportunist. The authoritarian and nationalist parties that have arisen within modern democracies offer new paths to wealth or power for their adherents. Describing politicians, journalists, intellectuals, and others who have abandoned democratic ideals in the UK, U.S., Spain, Poland, and Hungary, Applebaum reveals the patterns that link the new advocates of illiberalism and charts how they use conspiracy theory, political polarization, social media, and nostalgia to change their societies"</text>

              <text>Background
Stressors affect populations exposed to them as well as offspring. Strategies preventing the intergenerational propagation of effects of stress would benefit public health. Olfactory cue-based fear conditioning provides a framework to address this issue.
Methods
We 1) exposed adult male mice to an odor, acetophenone (Ace) or Lyral (parental generation [F0]-Exposed), 2) trained mice to associate these odors with mild foot shocks (F0-Trained), and 3) trained mice to associate these odors with mild foot shocks and then extinguished their fear toward these odors with odor-only presentations (F0-Extinguished). We then examined sensitivity of future generation (F1) offspring to these odors, expression of M71 odorant (Ace-responsive) and MOR23 odorant (Lyral-responsive) receptor-expressing cell populations in F1 offspring, and DNA methylation at genes encoding the Ace- (Olfr151, Olfr160) and Lyral- (Olfr16) responsive receptors in F0 sperm.
Results
Extinguishing fear toward Ace or Lyral of F0 male mice (F0-Extinguished) that had been fear conditioned with Ace or Lyral, respectively, results in F1-Extinguished offspring that do not demonstrate behavioral sensitivity to Ace or Lyral, respectively, and do not have enhanced representation for M71 or MOR23 odorant receptors in the olfactory system, as is observed in F1-Trained-Ace or F1-Trained-Lyral cohorts, respectively. The promoters of genes encoding Olfr151 and Olfr160 receptors are less methylated in F0-Trained-Ace sperm compared with F0-Exposed-Ace sperm. The Olfr16 promoter is less methylated in F0-Trained-Lyral sperm compared with F0-Exposed-Lyral sperm, and F0-Extinguished-Lyral sperm have methylation levels comparable to F0-Exposed-Lyral sperm.
Conclusions
Our study demonstrates the potential of using extinction-based behavioral strategies to reverse influences of parental stress in offspring and in the parental germline.</text>

<text>"Never before available, the unexpurgated last interview with James Baldwin "I was not born to be what someone said I was. I was not born to be defined by someone else, but by myself, and myself only." When, in the fall of 1987, the poet Quincy Troupe traveled to the south of France to interview James Baldwin, Baldwin's brother David told him to ask Baldwin about everything--Baldwin was critically ill and David knew that this might be the writer's last chance to speak at length about his life and work. The result is one of the most eloquent and revelatory interviews of Baldwin's career, a conversation that ranges widely over such topics as his childhood in Harlem, his close friendship with Miles Davis, his relationship with writers like Toni Morrison and Richard Wright, his years in France, and his ever-incisive thoughts on the history of race relations and the African-American experience. Also collected here are significant interviews from other moments in Baldwin's life, including an in-depth interview conducted by Studs Terkel shortly after the publication of Nobody Knows My Name. These interviews showcase, above all, Baldwin's fearlessness and integrity as a writer, thinker, and individual, as well as the profound struggles he faced along the way. Tish and Fonny have pledged to get married, but Fonny is falsely accused of a terrible crime and imprisoned. Their families set out to clear his name, and as they face an uncertain future, the young lovers experience a kaleidoscope of emotions-affection, despair, and hope. In a love story that evokes the blues, where passion and sadness are inevitably intertwined, Baldwin has created two characters so alive and profoundly realized that they are unforgettably ingrained in the American psyche."</text>
