<text>This volume represents the most comprehensive collection ever produced of empirical research on Holocaust education around the world. It comes at a critical time, as the world observes the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

We are now at a turning point, as the generations that witnessed and survived the Shoah are slowly passing on. Governments are charged with ensuring that this defining event of the 20th century takes its rightful place in the schooling and the historical consciousness of their peoples.

The policies and practices of Holocaust education around the world are as diverse as the countries that grapple with its history and its meaning. Educators around the globe struggle to reconcile national histories and memories with the international realities of the Holocaust and its implications for the present. These efforts take place at a time when scholarship about the Holocaust itself has made great strides.

In this book, these issues are framed by some of the leading voices in the field, including Elie Wiesel and Yehuda Bauer, and then explored by many distinguished scholars who represent a wide range of expertise.

Holocaust education is of such significance, so rich in meaning, so powerful in content, and so diverse in practice that the need for extensive, high-quality empirical research is critical. This book provides exactly that.</text>

<text>In the face of collective racial trauma faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, Asian Americans responded with resilience and coped by employing their ethnic and religious resources and traditions. These assets from their cultural tool kit included collective strength, active resistance to racism, and redemptive orientations toward adversity. Integrating research literature and two case studies—one from the Bible and one from an Asian American elder, this article describes these resources which not only buffer them from the negative psychological distress of racial trauma but also promote posttraumatic growth.</text>

<text>American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities have
relied on traditional ceremonial practices (TCPs) for survival and
resilience for generations. Research examining the role of TCPs on
wellness in urban, multi-tribal communities, however, has only recently
emerged over the last several decades. This study explored the association
between TCP-related variables and substance use in an urban AI/AN
community in Montana. Specifically, participant knowledge, attitudes, and
beliefs (KAB) regarding TCPs, their level of intent to participate in TCPs,
and past year substance use were measured. This cross-sectionalstudy used
survey data from 194 AI/AN adults (66% female, 5% nonbinary; M age =
44). Positive KAB toward TCPs was found in 56.4% of respondents.
Greater level of intent to participate in TCPs was found in 36.7% of
respondents. Multivariate logistic regression showed individuals with
positive KAB were less likely to report past year alcohol [adjusted odds
ratio (AOR): 0.49; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.26, 0.93] or other
drug use (AOR: 0.30; 95% CI: 0.11, 0.76). Individuals who reported a
greater level of intent to participate in TCPs were also less likely to report
past year alcohol (AOR: 0.51; 95% CI: 0.26, 0.98) or other drug use (AOR:
0.31; 95% CI: 0.08, 0.91). The findings highlight a need for further
examination of the potential effectiveness of substance use interventions for
urban AI/AN adults that incorporate TCP-related factors.</text>

<text>Forced assimilation of Native American peoples has led to the destruction of their traditional ways of life and contributed to heightened rates of Native American children in foster care, increased domestic violence, substance abuse, alcoholism, and poverty. The purpose of this study was to understand associations between perceived parenting behaviors and current adult attachment within Native American communities and whether those associations were moderated by historical loss. The attachment theory and historical trauma theory were used as theoretical foundations for the study. Research questions for this nonexperimental quantitative study involved associations between warmth and involvement and anxious and avoidant attachment behaviors during adulthood using the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) and Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised (ECR-R) instruments, as well as the Historical Loss Scale. 11 individuals participated in this study who were 18 or older, lived in the United States, and identified as Native American. A series of individual simple linear regressions were run for research questions. However, due to the inability to obtain a sufficient sample size, statistically significant results were not found. Further research on this topic and better access to the proposed population are recommended to support a clearer understanding of how parenting behaviors, attachment dimensions, and historical loss interact among Native Americans. This study contributes to positive social change through bringing awareness to the relationships dynamics within the Native American family system and the impact historical loss is having on that population in order to support healing for this community.</text>

<text>Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are highly prevalent globally, and both are associated with long-term negative health outcomes across the lifespan. Past research exploring the potential association between ACEs and TBI occurrence has demonstrated mixed findings. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the association between the ACEs measure and TBI occurrence. Moderator analyses were conducted to determine whether certain factors, including participant age, sex, and geographical location, modified the association between ACEs score and TBI occurrence. Searches were conducted in PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Embase, and CINHAL for studies published between January 1, 1998, and February 19, 2024. A total of 42 full-text articles were screened against inclusion criteria (i.e., measure of ACEs using the original 8- or 10-item scale or another composite measure of ACEs, TBI occurrence, and effect size for the association between ACEs score and TBI). Eight studies and 10 samples (N = 4954) were included in the meta-analysis. The data were synthesized using a random-effects multilevel meta-analysis, which revealed a significant large positive association between ACEs score and TBI occurrence, r = 0.31, 95% confidence interval [0.13, 0.49], p < 0.001. Moderator analyses did not yield significant results. The current findings demonstrate that individuals who reported a higher ACEs score were more likely to have reported sustaining a TBI, highlighting a need for trauma-informed efforts to prevent TBI and its adverse effects.

              <text>Background
Depression and asthma share several pathophysiologic risk factors, and their precise connection remains unclear. Our research seeks to assess the relationship between depression and asthma.

Methods
The association between depression and asthma was assessed through a multivariable logistic regression analysis, with data sourced from The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2018 and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) 2004–2019. Subsequently, a linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) analysis was conducted to evaluate the genetic correlation between depression and asthma. Moreover, a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted by employing genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics by means of both univariable MR (UVMR) and multivariable MR (MVMR).

Results
This study included 31,434 participants from NHANES and 17,021 participants from ELSA for observational research. In the unadjusted model, participants with depression had a significantly increased risk of asthma in comparison to participants without depression, both in NHANES (OR = 2.002, 95%CI: 1.827–2.193, P < 0.001) and in ELSA (OR = 1.753, 95%CI: 1.581–1.943, P < 0.001). After adjusting potential confounders, the results remain significant. The LDSC result revealed a significant positive genetic correlation between depression and asthma (rg = 0.352, P < 0.001).The UVMR results further substantiated a genetically predicted causality of depression on asthma (OR = 1.291, 95%CI: 1.157–1.442, P < 0.001), while the reverse causality does not stand. Similar findings from MVMR were obtained for the causality investigation after adjusting smoking (OR = 1.326, 95%CI: 1.156–1.520, P < 0.001), drinking (OR = 1.375, 95%CI: 1.186–1.593, P < 0.001), and education (OR = 1.425, 95%CI: 1.253–1.621, P < 0.001).

Conclusion
Our findings indicate that depression may play a contributory role in the development of asthma, underscoring the potential benefit of implementing prevention strategies aimed at managing depression to mitigate asthma risk.</text>

<text>Introduction: The high prevalence of mental disorders among adolescents calls for community-based and population-level prevention strategies. Diet is an important intervention target for primary prevention of mental disorders among adolescents. We used data from a large longitudinal study of Canadian adolescents (aged 14-18 y) to examine prospective associations between diet and mental health outcomes.

Methods: We estimated the effect of diet (ie, consumption of vegetables and fruit and sugar-sweetened beverages [SSBs]) at baseline on depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and psychological well-being (measured by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-Revised, Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 scale, and Flourishing Scale, respectively) and at 1-year follow-up in a sample of 13,887 Canadian secondary school students who participated in the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 cycles of the Cannabis, Obesity, Mental health, Physical activity, Alcohol, Smoking, and Sedentary (COMPASS) behavior study. We applied linear mixed-effects methods informed by a directed acyclic graph. Sensitivity analyses assessed the robustness of the effect estimates to unmeasured confounding variables.

Results: Baseline SSB consumption was associated with greater severity of depressive (β = 0.04; 95% CI, 0.01-0.06) and anxiety (β = 0.02; 95% CI, 0-0.05) symptoms, particularly among male students, and poorer psychological well-being (β = -0.03; 95% CI, -0.05 to -0.01) at follow-up. Baseline vegetables and fruit consumption was positively associated with psychological well-being (β = 0.06; 95% CI, 0.03-0.10) but not other mental health outcomes at follow-up.

Conclusion: Our results support the notion that diet should be part of comprehensive mental health prevention and promotion interventions to reduce the prevalence of mental health disorders among adolescents.</text>

              <text>Background
Recently, a decreasing trend has been observed in the frequency and duration of outdoor activity among children, which has garnered concern regarding the potential impacts of this decline during mental health in early childhood. Currently, the association between outdoor activity in early childhood and the symptoms of anxiety disorders in preschoolers remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between the frequency and duration of outdoor activity in children aged 0–1 and 1–3 years and anxiety symptoms in preschoolers.

Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 using questionnaires, included 69,571 preschoolers residing in Longhua District, Shenzhen. Data on family social demographics, outdoor activity frequency and duration in children aged 0–3 years, and the anxiety symptoms of preschoolers were collected through parent-completed questionnaires. Anxiety symptoms were measured using the Chinese version of the Spence Preschool Anxiety Scale (SPAS), which assesses symptoms across various dimensions. The association between early childhood outdoor activity and anxiety symptoms in preschoolers was analyzed using a binary logistic regression model.

Results
Children 0–1 years of age who were outdoors < 1 times/week had a higher risk of screening positive for anxiety symptoms in preschool age compared with children who were outdoors ≥ 7 times/week (OR = 2.55, 95% confidence interval(CI): 2.22–2.94). Children in this age group who were outdoors < 30 min/session had a higher risk of screening positive for anxiety symptoms in preschool age compared with children who were outdoors ≥ 120 min/ session (OR = 1.62, 95%CI: 1.38–1.90). Children 1–3 years of age, who were outdoors < 1 time/week had a higher risk of screening positive for anxiety symptoms in preschool age compared with children who were outdoors ≥ 7 times/week, (OR = 3.10, 95%CI: 2.72–3.54). Children in this age group who were outdoors for < 30 min/session had a higher risk of screening positive for anxiety symptoms in preschool age compared with children who were outdoors time ≥ 120 min/ session (OR = 2.07, 95%CI: 1.73–2.48).

Conclusion
Lower frequency and shorter duration of outdoor activity during infancy (0–1 and 1–3 years) had higher odds of screening positive for anxiety symptoms in preschoolers. A frequency of ≥ 7 outdoor activity per week and a duration of ≥ 120 min/session during infancy were associated with lower levels of anxiety symptoms in preschoolers. These findings provide actionable insights for parents and caregivers, highlighting the importance of promoting outdoor activity in early childhood care and parenting practices. Future studies should further explore the causal relationship between outdoor activity and the prevention of anxiety.</text>

              <text>Background
Intake of ultra-processed foods (UPF) provides more than half of the daily energy US adults consume. Still, the prospective association of UPF consumption with mortality in the general US population remains understudied.
Objective
To investigate the prospective association of UPF consumption with mortality in a nationally representative sample of US adults.
Design
A prospective cohort analysis was conducted by linking baseline measurement from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with mortality information from the National Death Index. The percentage of total energy consumed from UPF, defined by the Nova classification system, was computed based on dietary data collected using 24-hour diet recalls.
Participants/setting
This study included 38 148 nationally representative US adults aged 20 years and older who participated in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2003-2004 and 2017-2018 and provided dietary intake data, with linkage to mortality data.
Main outcome measures
Information on all-cause and cause-specific mortality was obtained from linkage to the National Death Index through December 31, 2019.
Statistical analysis performed
Cox proportional hazard models estimated the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios and 95% CIs for the association between UPF intake and mortality.

During a median follow-up of 8.0 years, 4611 deaths were confirmed, including 2064 deaths from cardiometabolic disorders and 1046 deaths from cancer. After multivariable adjustments, each 10-point increment in usual percentage of total energy from UPF was associated with a 9% higher risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio 1.09, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.14). The association remained significant after adjusting for the overall diet quality measured by the Health Eating Index 2015 (hazard ratio 1.06, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.11; P < .05). Among subgroups, sugar-sweetened beverages, ready-to-eat or -heat mixed dishes, ultra-processed dairy products, and ultra-processed oil/fat, condiments, and sauces were associated with an increased risk of all-cause or cause-specific mortality. Ultra-processed vegetables and legumes were associated with a reduced risk.
Conclusions
In this nationally representative study of US adults, higher consumption of UPF was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality, and this association was not fully explained by overall diet quality.</text>

              <text>Background
The association between ultra-processed food (UPF) intake and markers of biological ageing has been scarcely investigated, despite the evident adverse health effects associated with UPF. This study aimed to test the association between UPF intake and biological ageing, and evaluate how much of this association is accounted for by overall diet quality.

Methods
This cross-sectional study assessed 16 055 participants aged 20–79 years (51% women, 46 ± 0.3 years) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003–2010. Dietary UPF intake was assessed using the Nova system. Values were expressed as % of total energy intake and were denominated as a continuous variable and in quintiles. Diet quality was assessed with the American Heart Association 2020 and the Healthy Eating Index 2015. Biological ageing was assessed using the PhenoAge algorithm.

Results
For each 10% of energy intake accounted for by UPF, participants were 0.21 (95%CI 0.16–0.26) years biologically older in terms of PhenoAge. As compared to participants in the lowest UPF quintile (≤39%), those in the highest UPF quintile (68–100%) were 0.86 (95% CI 0.55, 1.16) years older (P-for-trend across quintiles ≤0.001). Adherence to a healthy diet moderately attenuated the relationship between UPF and PhenoAge (adjusted β = 0.14 per 10% increment of UPF).

Conclusions
Adults with higher UPF tended to be biologically older. This association is partly independent of diet quality, suggesting that food processing may contribute to biological ageing acceleration. Our findings point to a compelling reason to target UPF consumption to promote healthier ageing.</text>

              <text>Introduction
Ultraprocessed dietary patterns have been associated with higher risk of weight gain. Previous studies were conducted in high-income countries using dietary assessment tools not specifically designed to identify ultraprocessed foods. The purpose of this study was to examine the prospective association between ultraprocessed dietary pattern and risk of weight gain in Brazilian adults.
Methods
Data from 24,453 participants from NutriNet-Brasil cohort study who responded to 2 Nova24h dietary recalls at baseline and were followed for a median of 43.6 months were analyzed. Ultraprocessed dietary pattern was assessed on the basis of the contribution of ultraprocessed foods to total energy intake. Weight gain was defined as ≥5% and ≥10% increase from baseline body weight on the basis of self-reported measurements. Cox proportional hazards models, and stratified analyses were performed.
Results
A linear dose–response association was observed: for each 10% increase in ultraprocessed foods contribution, the risk of ≥5% weight gain increased by 5% (10,092 cases, hazard ratio=1.05; 95% CI=1.04, 1.07), and the risk of ≥10% weight gain increased by 8% (4,865 cases, hazard ratio=1.08; 95% CI=1.06, 1.10). Compared with participants in the lowest quintile (<11.8% of ultraprocessed foods), those in the highest quintile (≥34.0%) had higher risk of weight gain (≥5%: hazard ratio=1.23; 95% CI=1.15, 1.31; ≥10%: hazard ratio=1.35; 95% CI=1.23, 1.48). These associations persisted but attenuated after adjustment for diet nutritional profile.
Conclusions
Higher exposure to ultraprocessed dietary pattern was associated with an increased risk of weight gain in Brazilian adults.</text>

              <text>Purpose
Little is known about the association between low- and no-calorie sweetened (LCS) product consumption and children’s dietary quality, despite the promotion of these products as sugar alternatives. This study examines the trends and associations between LCS product consumption and intakes of free sugar, ultra-processed food and beverages (UPFB), and other key dietary components among UK children.

Methods
Repeated annual cross-sectional data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2008/09-2018/19) for children aged 4–18 years (N = 5,922) were analysed. Children were categorized into No-LCS (0%g/day), Low-LCS (≤ 6.8%g/day), Mid-LCS (6.9–17.4%g/day), and High-LCS (≥ 17.4%g/day) groups based on a four-day food diary. The trends and associations were assessed using multivariable linear regression models, adjusted for sociodemographic factors.

Results
In 2008/09, the High-LCS group had lower free sugar intake (-1.9%kcaltotal/day; 95% CI: -2.8, -1.0) compared with the No-LCS group. Over 11 years, free sugar intake declined in all groups, with similar declines observed across the LCS groups. By 2018/19, no difference in free sugar intake was observed between the High-LCS and No-LCS groups. Moreover, consumption of UPFB decreased (-0.8%gtotal/day per year; 95%CI: -1.1, -0.6) while water increased (2.7%gdrink/day per year; 95%CI: 2.2, 3.1) in the No-LCS group over 11 years. Similar changes were observed in other LCS groups but were less pronounced in the High-LCS (vs. No-LCS) group.

Conclusions
LCS product consumption was not consistently associated with lower free sugar intake among UK children. Differences in intakes of ultra-processed foods and water highlight the importance of considering dietary patterns beyond individual nutrients.</text>
