<text>Objective:
To identify the barriers accessing health (including mental health) services by Indigenous people in Victoria, Australia, and putative solutions, through yarns with 44 members of the Victorian Aboriginal community.
Methods:
This paper systematically explores grassroots barriers and potential solutions for Indigenous young people to engage and use health (including mental health) services. Elder-governed yarns were conducted via Zoom with 44 representative Victorian Aboriginal Elders, Healers, Senior and Junior people involved in the health and wellbeing of the Victorian Aboriginal community. These yarns were analyzed through an innovative, constructivist, multi-perspectival discursive grounded theory method.
Results:
Five pre-eminent themes emerged: the socio-economic barriers to services, the ongoing effects of colonization, disconnection and isolation from community and Country, pressures in society of living in two worlds and lack of cultural safety and racism. Detailed and rich day-to-day barriers and possible grassroots solutions were proffered.
Conclusions:
The analyzed yarns provide important detail about everyday barriers Indigenous peoples face in healthcare services and potential ways forward to improve the situation for Indigenous young people and their kinship networks. This paper can help shape future policy and its implementation. In particular, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organizations running traditional Indigenous healing programmes alongside Western health management, ensuring formal processes predominate and are monitored for their day-to-day effectiveness</text>

              <text>Background
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples are custodians of one of the oldest living societies; however, the continued impact of colonisation has led to profound trauma and loss which has spanned generations. This resulted in feelings of powerlessness and a lack of control, both associated with suicidal behaviours. While research has investigated the external risk factors that precipitate suicidal behaviours in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, there has only been a recent focus towards assessing the specific thoughts and feelings associated with suicidal behaviours.

Aim
The current systematic review sought to investigate the existing body of literature on the thoughts and feelings associated with suicidal behaviours in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.

Method
PsychINFO, Scopus, MEDLINE, Informit Indigenous Collection, Informit Health Collection, EMBASE, Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Bibliography, and Family-ATSIS were searched from database inception until March, 2024.

Results
Four studies met the strict inclusion criteria. Preliminary results indicated those who reported distress in their social relationships were more likely to report suicidal behaviours than those who were thinking about managing their own emotional difficulties.

Conclusion
Additional research is needed to validate and extend the results of this review.</text>

<text>While previous research often emphasizes the negative impacts of colonization on First Nations People, the focus of this work was on highlighting cultural strengths and resilience, especially among youth facing the challenge of transitioning into adulthood. Despite existing theories like positive youth development, our understanding of positive development among ethnic minority groups, including First Nations youth, remains limited. We review factors associated with resilience and protective factors, suggesting strategies to enhance positive development. We summarize a cross-national study on Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth in Australia and the United States, emphasizing the protective effect of community engagement and volunteering. We then overview a pilot employment and mentoring program designed for First Nations People in Victoria, Australia, focusing on community aspirations, cultural engagement, and wellbeing outcomes. The program showed positive effects on goal attainment, employment, and cultural involvement. We conclude by discussing how our findings can be applied in mentoring programs, school curricula, and efforts within broader communities to promote positive development outcomes for young First Nations People throughout the world.</text>

<text>This study aimed to assess cross-cultural measurement invariance of the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australian adults, focusing on its applicability in diverse cultural contexts. We analysed 24-month follow-up data from a longitudinal cohort study on oral HPV infection and oropharyngeal cancer (HPVOPC) with 729 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and baseline data from the Dental Care and Oral Health Study (DCOHS), encompassing 4,086 non-Indigenous South Australians. Using network analysis and permutation testing, we examined configural and metric invariance. The MSPSS maintained its three-dimensional structure in both cultural groups (configural invariance). However, three items showed weaker loadings in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander network models compared to models for non-Indigenous participants. These differences had minimal impact on total scores, but may affect sub-scale comparisons. The MSPSS demonstrates robust psychometric properties for cross-cultural research on social support among both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous Australians. While partial invariance suggests the need for caution in interpreting sub-scale scores, the MSPSS provides valuable insights into social support dimensions across populations.</text>

              <text>Background
Despite known inequalities, little is understood about the burden and healthcare experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who sustain a burn injury and their families.
Methods
The Coolamon Study recruited parents and carers whose children (aged <16 years) were Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander children and had presented to burn units across four Australian states, New South Wales (Sydney), Northern Territory (Darwin), Queensland (Brisbane, Townsville) and South Australia (Adelaide), between 2015 and 2018. Consent was obtained and carers completed baseline and subsequent interviews at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months. Data were collected on the injury event, patient care and safety, sociodemographic factors, health related quality of life (PedsQual), and psychological distress (Kessler K-5).
Results
Of the 208 participants, 64 % were male; 26 % were aged less than 2 years and 37 % aged 2–4 years. The most common burn mechanisms were scalds (37 %), contact (33 %) and flame burns (21 %), with more severe burns and flame burns occurring in rural and remote settings. Most carers rated their child’s care as either excellent or very good (82 %). Family distress, measured by the K-5, lessened over the 24 months, however the changes were not statistically significant. While 77 % of carers reported that they received enough information, 18 % reported they would have liked more, and 3 % reported no information was provided before treatment. Parents described mixed access to information about the types of support available to them, such as accommodation, meals, travel or cultural support.
Conclusion
Data from this cohort provide rich new information about risk factors and care received from point of injury through to rehabilitation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children with burns, providing unique insights into what is needed for appropriate, culturally safe care.</text>

              <text>Objective
This paper investigates Burn First Aid Treatment (BFAT) provided to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Australia at the scene of injury using data from a population-based cohort study.
Study Design
The participants were 208 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged < 16 years who sustained a burns injury between 2015–2018, and their carers. The primary outcome measure was gold standard BFAT, (defined as at least 20 min of cool, running water within 3 h of the injury); additional measures included type of first aid, length of first aid provided, and carer's knowledge of first aid.
Results
Of the 208 caregivers, 168 provided open-ended responses that indicated first aid was applied to their child; however, only 34 received gold standard BFAT at the scene of the injury, 110 did not receive correct BFAT, and 24 were unsure what first aid was applied.
Conclusion
This study highlights an important need for communities to have access to appropriate evidence-based and co-designed BFAT education and training.</text>

<text>This essay is an introduction to the thematic issue of Transcultural Psychiatry in honor of the work of Michael Chandler and Christopher Lalonde, developmental psychologists who made essential contributions to the study of identity and wellness among Indigenous youth in Canada and internationally. We outline their major contributions and illustrate the ways their innovative theory and methods have inspired decades of research, including the recent work presented in this issue, which addresses four broad themes: (1) the importance of a developmental perspective in mental health research; (2) the role of individual and collective continuity of identity in suicide prevention and mental health promotion; (3) Indigenous perspectives on trauma and resilience; and (4) Indigenous knowledge and values as a basis for culturally adapted and culturally grounded mental health services and interventions.</text>

<text>Aboriginal Australians experience a high prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with high rates of potentially preventable hospitalisations. However, little is known about Aboriginal peoples’ experiences of living with COPD and how they navigate health care systems. This study used thematic analysis and Aboriginal methodology to explore Aboriginal peoples’ lived experiences of COPD, their health care journey from receiving a diagnosis of COPD to the clinical management, and the impact of COPD on their daily lives. We conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews over a 6-month period with 18 Aboriginal adults diagnosed with COPD from four Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) in New South Wales, Australia. Reflexive thematic analysis was employed to ensure rigour. The findings revealed deeply personal and reflective stories shaped by historical, social, and cultural realities of Aboriginal peoples living with COPD. Four themes were identified characterising their experiences. Based on the findings, the following guidance is provided on future COPD care for Aboriginal peoples: Better alignment of existing COPD management with Aboriginal peoples’ cultural contexts and perspectives to improve access to culturally safe care; Increased funding for ACCHS to enhance COPD management, such as early detection through case finding and access to ACCHS-led pulmonary rehabilitation; Engaging family members in COPD management and providing culturally centred COPD education that facilitates discussions and builds health literacy and self-management skills; Implementing health promotion initiatives to increase awareness and counteract fear and shame to improve early COPD detection.</text>

<text>This Special Issue interrogates the limitations and possibilities of truth within global efforts to address historical injustice. Over the past 30 years truth commissions have become ubiquitous in response to authoritarian regimes and colonial legacies. However, their ability to facilitate meaningful transformation is increasingly contested. In this editorial we explore what a decolonial reckoning, rather than reconciliation, with the past and colonial logics of power, might mean. In doing so, we argue that the liberal, modernist imaginary of justice on which many truth processes have been premised, is constraining our imagination of more radical ‘fugitive’ forms justice. Drawing from contributions from Australia and other global contexts this special issue investigates these limitations and the transformative potential of truth as a decolonial, sovereign, embodied and relational praxis. Contributors engage with the pluriversality of truth in ways that trouble the nation-state and centre the sovereignty and onto-epistemology of racialised and First Nations peoples, often excluded from transitional justice processes, thus offering pathways for radical resistance, resurgence and prefigurative transformation.</text>

<text>The research addresses the relatively neglected subject of anti-racism in Australia. Forms of day-to-day anti-racism action and prosocial intercultural interaction already exist, often in public and semi-public places. Yet they have received little attention in anti-racism research and practice, programs and policymaking. To our knowledge, this is the first global survey to examine everyday anti-racism practices on such a large scale, and the first to quantitatively measure 'transversal enabler' practices, for creating connections between people from different cultural backgrounds who inhabit the same locality. The research maps the frequencies and forms of everyday anti-racism and prosocial attitudes and interaction in Victoria; identifies the factors and social variations that underlie everyday action; and explores transversal enabler practices quantitatively, including their prevalence. It indicates a gap between positive dispositions towards cultural diversity and actual involvement in practices that foster social transformation. We suggest that Victorians can do better on everyday pro-sociality and make a series of recommendations on strategies to inform anti-racism practice, program and policies for more meaningful and deeper intercultural engagement.</text>
